In Pakistan, a Sex Industry Has Begun to Boom
Early military governments and religious groups sought to reform areas like the famous “Taxali Gate” district of Lahore by displacing prostitutes and their families in an effort to “reinvent” the neighborhood.
While displacing the prostitutes might have temporarily made the once small red-light district a better neighborhood for a time, it did little to stop the now dispersed prostitutes from plying their trade. Reforming a neighborhood, instead of offering education and alternative opportunities, appears to be at the core of early failures to curb the nascent sex industry. This mistake would become a prophetic error as now the tendrils of the sex trade have become omnipresent in cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi and Lahore, not to mention towns, villages and rural outposts.
An aid worker for an Islamabad-based non-governmental organization (NGO) recently related a story: quickly after his arrival in the capital, he realized the house next to his own was a Chinese brothel. The Chinese ability to “franchise” the commercial sex industry by providing down-trodden Chinese women throughout Asia, North America and Europe would be admirable in a business sense if it were not for the atrocities – human trafficking, sexual slavery and exploitation – which cloud its practice.
Chinese bordellos, often operating as “massage parlors” or beauty salons, are across Pakistan, even spread even to war-torn and restive locations such as the Afghan capital Kabul. Chinese in the sex industry have developed a cunning ability to recognize areas where the demand for sex far outstrips the supply.
The NGO worker said that after months of living adjacent to the brothel things were shaken up – literally. One evening a drunk Pakistani drove his car into the brothel. Later the driver told authorities the ramming was a protest by a devout Muslim against the debauchery of the house and its inhabitants. The NGO worker, however, had seen the same car parked peacefully outside the house the night before.
The local sex industry comprised of Pakistani prostitutes has also grown in recent years. One can easily find videos on YouTube that show unabashed red-light areas of Lahore. The videos display house after house with colorfully lit entranceways always with a mamasan and at least one Pakistani woman in traditional dress. The women are available for in-house services for as little as 400 rupees (US$6) to take-away prices ranging 1,000 to 2,000 rupees. These districts are mostly for locals, but foreigners can indulge at higher prices.
Foreigners in Pakistan have no trouble finding companionship and may receive rates similar to locals in downtrodden districts. More upscale areas like Lahore’s Heera Mundi or “Diamond Market”, cater to well-heeled locals and foreigners. At these places prettier, younger girls push their services for 5,000 to 10,000 rupees for an all-night visit, and the most exceptional can command 20,000 to 40,000 rupees for just short time.
Rumors abound online that female TV stars and actresses can be hired for sex. “You can get film stars for 50,000 to 100,000 rupees but you need good contacts for that,” one blogger wrote after a trip to Lahore.
“The Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi sex scenes are totally changing and it’s easier and easier to get a girl for [sex],” another blogger wrote. “Most of the hotels provide you the girls upon request.” Bloggers also reported that it is easy to find girls prowling the streets after 6 pm, and foreigners can find young women hanging out near Western franchises like McDonald’s and KFC. Such women, the bloggers claim, can lead the customer to a nearby short-time accommodation.
Short-time hotels offering hourly rates can be found all over major cities, underscoring the profits being reaped by the sex industry.
Pakistan can also accommodate the gay community with prostitution. Unfortunately, this has also given rise to child prostitution.
A Pakistani blogger wrote, “We [ethnic] Pathans are very fond of boys. [In Pakistan] the wives are only [had sex with] once or twice a year. There are lot of gay brothels in Peshawar – the famous among them is at Ramdas Bazaar. [One can] go to any Afghan restaurant and find young waiters selling sex.”
As in many societies, access to technology, the Internet and mobile phones has only facilitated the sex trade in Pakistan. “Matchmaking” websites serve the male clientele, while providing marketing for prostitutes.
The root causes of prostitution in Pakistan are poverty and a dearth of opportunities. Widows find themselves on the streets with mouths to feed, and for many prostitution offers a quick fix. A local Pakistani prostitute can earn 2,000 to 3,000 rupees per day compared to the average monthly income of 2,500 rupees.
Forced prostitution is not rare. Women in hard times are often exploited and pushed into prostitution. Sandra (not her real name), said that after the death of her father she was left alone; friends and relatives deserted her after the grieving period. As a middle-class, educated woman she was surprised to find herself forced into prostitution from her office job.
“My boss initially spoiled me at first,” she told Khaleej Times. “[But] now I am in [the sex industry].” Sandra first thought her boss was being gracious, but quickly learned he was grooming her for sex for his own pleasure, and then acting as her pimp.
Many of Pakistan’s contemporary sexual mores may have evolved from traditional practices. For example, the polygamy permitted in Muslim society stemmed from the need for larger family units, the better to support familial ties and tend for widows. Until such ancient customs are updated, women such as Sandra will continue to be bought and sold.
It’s time for Pakistan to admit that prostitution is doing a roaring trade within its borders, and will continue to prosper until it is addressed in a modern manner. Let us hope that the people and government of this proud Muslim country will stop pretending the problem simply isn’t there.

What the author points out is Musharraf’s allowing this industry to spread to respectable neighbourhoods, etc. As we all unite to hate an existing dictator we have to keep in mind a terrible curse he has left Pakistan in. Not to mention, there are videos on youtube of women on tv pointing towards their unmentionables because they have blindly started wearing such tight clothes and now I now hear aging women on Pakistani tv talking about their receding looks. I have also heard from word of mouth that Musharraf jokingly claims to have slept with all women (of Pakistan). This is a highly shamefully thing for a country in which people are either apathetic or gutless.

i believe the Society in which we are living is continously under Physiological problems such as high inflation , family problems political unrest and Terrorist attacks are so common in Pakistan my country i truly love the most that it has created a wave of unending aniexty in the life of the our people. And many other issues that we know of in this stressfull era has ENFORCED man or a woman to look for a way of retreat or an escape route that can give them a sense of relief to their endless efforts to get rid of their problems i am not saying that SEX should be legalized but this is considered between many others unhealthy coupings for release of TENSION that resides with in us and i also believe it is very difficult for an ordinary person to controll his urge for satisfaction and he will find a way to calm himself no matter how he does it , with in same sex or he/she gets involve with another genre. It is not about ISLAM or of ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN i think and may be i am wrong it is about human NATURE and it’s demand and how you fullfill that demand either HOOK or by CROOK. with your better half or with another person.

I remember my shock when being in first year of inter i learned that women do intercourses and it was shock to me. My prescription for you, though I’m not qualified in any degree, is for you to start focus yourself. First focus on yourself. Put aside the emotional drama and see where you could be better. Then make goals to improve yourself, and just do it!
At the same time, you need to cleanse yourself mentally and physically. Do some research, work with your physician, and start cleansing your internals. Start exercising if you don’t already. Work out 5 times a week at least. Do a mix of cardio and weights. Don’t skimp on the weightlifting. Find a routine on the internet. Weightlifting will help you become disciplined and bring some ‘mojo’ into your system.
Lastly, start praying 5 times a day. You need to show your boy that the way of the Muslims is to pray. Remember, whatever you lecture him, he isn’t listening. Instead, he will be imitating whatever you do. So I hope you understand you have to focus on yourself to train him. Good luck. Try this for at least 6 months and you’ll see results.

If children are told about sex in school, if parents speak to children about the intensity of sexual intimacy, if young people are taught not to divide all women into either hookers or angels, if adolescent boys and girls are given the tools with which to control their own sexuality and if our legislation is amended to reflect the reality of human sexuality… only then can the scourge of human trafficking, exploitation and sexual violence be controlled.

there is defnitely a factor of our hypocritical society that leads to sexual frustration among men consequently explaining demand for prostitution.
but there is another element to it. why does the demand for female prostitutes still exist in sexually liberated societies? the reason is that there is an inherent difference between sexualities of men and women that means men have a stronger desire for CASUAL SEX ie sex without strings attached. young men who are single dont want to get married every time they want sex and its reletively much difficult for men to find a willing sex partner.
women, in any society, are 10 times more selective about a casual sex partner (in any society) and so when a man wants JUST SEX, chances are that he might have to pay for it.

Sex is part of life and my little reading tells me that sex is dealt with in a refreshingly pragmatic and matter of fact manner in Islamic literature including, if I am not mistaken, in some Hadiths.
But Islam too has been overtaken by people whose beards grow into their brains, with Pakistan becoming the unofficial leader. The suppression of sex by ignorants is so extreme that, like the pink elephant, it obsesses and consumes people who are forbidden any access to allow a perfectly natural phenomenon to manifest.
Of course Arabs are the usual culprits who are blamed, but Pakistan is not far behind in its mindless suppression of sex. Muslim women have been portrayed as so “unreachable” that conquest of the kafir woman abroad becomes essential for a lot of Pakistanis. This is sad for Pakistanis. From a kafir viewpoint – Muslim women are no less sensual than anyone else, but they can only express that in secret with kafir men or they are toast. There is no need for all this.

I think Pakistan is a banana republic(although Gen Musharraf denied it wheminently). Any industry thrive on principle of demand and supply. There is lot of demand due to black money and there is lot of supply due to poverty and injustices in society. Family strucrtures have weakned, explosion of internet and cheap text rates have given independence and secrcy to young girls from lower middle class families. The girls are sitting in-between their father and brothers and texting their friends with immunity. For any frustated person, a reason is required to trip and the unjustices in our society provide planty of reasons.I am not much concerned about prostition, which is the oldest profession anyway, but my main concern is those young girls from respectable families who go back to their dinning table after making 1000 rupees.

sex is essential for every man and woman as like water drinking and food eating or sleeping this is the responsibility of govt that provide opportunity to all above age of 18 year as a fundamental right of the citizen and make simplest marriage system in pakistan to full filling of the existing requirement of citizens. For temprary sexual relationship Muta should allowed because it is the need of today and minimize un natural sexual satisfaction methods i.e. animal sex. sex toys, homosexuality, mastarbation etc. and only man and woman should allowed for sexual intercourse of both type permanent sexual relationship with permanent marriage couples and Muta for casual sex relationship it will be much more better than existing condition. 2nd, 3rd and 4th marriage should allowed to those man who can justified with their wives. Married women they are not satisfied with their husband should seprate immidiately and no women should allowed to be born baby of other than their husbands.

I agree with your suggestion that the government should also cater to the sex needs of the people. The Peoples Partiy’s slogan ‘Roti, Kaprha aur Makan” should also include a promise for provision of sex as roti, kaprha aur makan to jail mein bhi milta he. This oldest profession is the golbal disease, if it was a disease. Nature has put sex in animal kingdom (including homo sapiens) for production of descendents to keep alive the kingdom. Dolphins and humans are only two species that have sex for pleasure, for other species reproduction is the main criterion. Therefore, sex among man and woman (both) is integral part of life. Since society prohibits sexual relations other than marriage contracts, the sex urge remains within control in most of men and women as they have to remain unblemished in the eyes of society, and restrict themselves with bed time fantasies and masturbations. But, five fingers are not the same. Some men (women as well) have thrill in no nos. The prositution started from there on demand and supply axis.
Whoever is the author of this article has some biased perception among muslim countries. While this oldest profession is worldwide and more blossoming in Western world, he chose to pen down about Pakistan. The author has blown out of proportion on this subject. Prostituion is many fold more in West than in Pakistan, though there is no below poverty problem there. My brotherly advice to him is to take up the issue from there where it is maddening spread. Thanks to internet, prostitution in West has taken a progressive turn. There are thousands (if not million) Escort sites on internet. Prosititutes are no more required to stand in their revealing tank tops and stockings on the footpaths for customers, no apprehention of cops, all deals settled through emails or private telephone links.
For us, the point to ponder is Misyar marriage or vacational marriage being practiced in Arab world. I think it is a form of legalized prositution. I will pen down on this issue some other time. I had said I would submit 2 cent, looks like it is 5 cent now.
