It is the table's fault

By Sista That’s the name I’ve given to what is one of the central problems with Pakistani men. The “It’s the table’s fault” syndrome. How many of us have seen this happen? A kid is running around, bumps into the table and starts crying. His anxious parents immediately attend to their “Laal” “Chanda” with ” Mera baita theek to hai na?” “kidhar lagi hai?” all of which only makes the brat howl even louder. And then….brilliantly…they start mock hitting the table. “Ganda Maiz!” “Sara maiz ka kassoor hai” “maro maiz ko”….and suddenly, Voila, Magic! the kid stops crying, happy, vindicated. The “culprit” has been punished. … Read entire article »

How we helped create the Afghan crisis

By Stephen Kinzer WITH THE United States facing a terrifying set of challenges in Pakistan and Afghanistan, this is an opportune moment to look back at how the United States itself helped create the crisis. It is an all-too-familiar tale of the behemoth lashing out in ways that seem emotionally satisfying and even successful at first, but that in the end decisively weaken its own security. … Read entire article »

He who "out-Sharons even Sharon"

By Robert Fisk Only days after they were groaning with fury at the Israeli lobby’s success in hounding the outspoken Charles Freeman away from his proposed intelligence job for President Obama, the Arabs now have to contend with an Israeli Foreign Minister whose – let us speak frankly – racist comments about Palestinian loyalty tests have brought into the new Netanyahu cabinet one of the most unpleasant politicians in the Middle East. … Read entire article »

Seven Strange Wars

1. The Anglo-Zanzibar War: the shortest war in history, only 40 minutes long Fought between the United Kingdom and Zanzibar on 27 August 1896, the conflict lasted approximately 40 minutes, making it the shortest war in history. The immediate cause of the war was the death of the pro-British Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini and the subsequent succession of Sultan Khalid bin Barghash. The British authorities preferred Hamud bin Muhammed as Sultan. In accordance with a treaty signed in 1886, a condition for accession to the sultancy was that the candidate obtain the permission of the British Consul, and Khalid had not fulfilled this requirement. The British considered this a casus belli and sent an ultimatum to Khalid demanding that he order his forces to stand down and leave the palace. In … Read entire article »

Flying Home

Sari making a comeback in Pakistani fashion

Sari making a comeback in Pakistani fashion

The Sari in Pakistan did a disappearing act after it was declared un-Islamic by Zia. But the whole six yards has made a comeback in the form of formal wear as well as in the trousseaus of Pak girls. Uniquely Pakistani Stories

Uniquely Pakistani Stories

By Yasser Latif Hamdani 45 year old Daniyal Mueenuddin doesn’t look anything like your run of the mill writer.   At the very least, he certainly would not be cast as a writer in a movie nor as a lawyer- his occupation in an earlier life- for that matter.  With his easy going American mannerisms makes him a cowboy of sorts in a world where cowboys are unpopular.  It is no wonder then that he has … Read entire article »

Towards Theocracy

By Pervez Hoodbhoy FOR 20 years or more, a few of us in Pakistan have been desperately sending out SOS messages, warning of terrible times to come. Nevertheless, none anticipated how quickly and accurately our dire predictions would come true. It is a small matter that the flames of terrorism set Mumbai on fire and, more recently, destroyed Pakistan’s cricketing future. A much more important and brutal fight lies ahead as Pakistan, a nation of 175 million, struggles for its very survival. The implications for the future of South Asia are enormous. … Read entire article »
