Pakistani Fashion Trailblazes Into 2010

At the moment it may seem like hell may freeze over before Pakistan find some kind of stability, but one sincerely hopes that our journey towards peace and prosperity begins in the year 2010. Meanwhile, the fashion industry has reared an adventurous head of its own and promises to bring many exciting propositions to the arena at large. As we step into 2010, almost two decades after fashion shows were publicised as cultural shows under senseless censorship, fashion in Pakistan has actually outrun every other liberal event in the country. Here’s a brief preview of the great expectations from fashion in the coming year… … Read entire article »

Poem: Haiti Earthquake

Poem: Haiti Earthquake

As the earth shifts its burden From one end to another, The story of few seconds Caught in between The old and young The women and children The poverty and its recipients Knows no bounds The pain and the damage The old infliction As the human wound Out in the open, Underneath the rubble, Out in the distance, From one end to another In sadness and despair Come forward and help The old human expression The old sigh and its screams As the earth shifts its burden! Pakistan And US – A Balancing Act

By Yasser Latif Hamdani There are some fundamental truths that both Pakistanis and Americans need to understand about our mutual relationship especially in Afghanistan : 1.  Pakistan and US are natural allies.  I know the fashionable in India and the US like to talk of a “natural alliance” between their two countries but both India and the US must realize that theirs can be at best a mercantile relationship.   Natural alliances are not necessarily based on  hollow idealism and grandiose but ridiculous propositions like the “arcs of democracy”. If this was true,  Pakistan and Russia would be natural allies but they are not.   Natural alliances are based on convergence of geo-strategic objectives and in the case of Pakistan the long term interests of Pakistan and US will always coincide in this region.     … Read entire article »

Tragedy In Haiti

We in Pakistan mourn the loss of life in Haiti and hope our common humanity will endure this gravest of tragedies. For many of us this isreminiscent of the 2005 quake. The US is planning a massive military response to the disaster, saying that ships, helicopters, transport planes and a 2,000-member Marine unit are either on the way or likely to begin moving soon. But their arrival may be too late for thousands of Port-au-Prince residents. It is estimated that between 50,000 to 100,000 people died in the quake, but Haitian senator Youri Latortue said the final figure could reach half a million. … Read entire article »

The 1935 Mindset

By Brigadier Samson Simon Sharaf Political stability has evaded Pakistan since 1947. Bureaucratic intrigues, repeated military interventions and exclusion of popular governments have fortified the role of elites. They have directly and indirectly toppled governments to ensure that Pakistan’s political clock clocks what they want. These elites have exploited the many gaps in political structure of Pakistan for entrenchment, wherein even apparently popular governments once in opposition adopted a similar approach. According to Rafay Alam: “There has been no revolutionary exertion of rights in this part of the world; it is not difficult to conclude that the Pakistani state did not acquire a fresh personality at its birth and that instead, it inherited the worst possible mindset for running a country.” Similarly, Dr Mubashir Hassan has often made slanted references to … Read entire article »

Desperation Time?

By HOSS Two speeches by President Obama within a span of one week have shown how incredibly superficial arguments are being made by the US administration to continue the war in Afghanistan. The Obama administration does not even appear to be convinced of the necessity of the Afghan war. In his next speech in Oslo, Norway he presented the Obama’s doctrine of “just wars”. After more than eight years in Afghanistan, does the “Just war” doctrine really apply? … Read entire article »

Iraq Inquiry

Iraq Inquiry

Realise they will one day, As the hour of reckoning Not upon them yet, not in our grasp Not lost though, the trail of truth It will come, it will arrive Fly away time, sooner Fly away, age of conclusion It will arrive, it will come Upon them, on their deathbeds, As winter’s wind pierces the skin The wrath of Providence Upon their bodies and soul, Sink they will into that darkness In old remains of their disguises As lips will mutter old muses Of conceit and conspiracies Incoherent words what … Read entire article »

Reforming khakis

By Babar Sattar            The News, January 09, 2010 The end of Musharraf’s rule, return of leaders of our mainstream political parties, restoration of the representative electoral process, restitution of independent-minded judiciary, recent rulings in the PCO judges case and the NRO, together with the role of our diligent media and civil society all mark the advent of an age of constitutionalism, rule of law and democracy. This journey might be slow and perilous, but rule of law and constitutionalism are the only mechanisms available to resurrect a peaceful, strong and stable Pakistan wherein equality and justice thrive along with hope and economic well-being. … Read entire article »

Religion and Women

Religion and Women By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF Published: January 9, 2010 All rights reserved with New York Times Company Religions derive their power and popularity in part from the ethical compass they offer. So why do so many faiths help perpetuate something that most of us regard as profoundly unethical: the oppression of women? It is not that warlords in Congo cite Scripture to justify their mass rapes (although the last warlord I met there called himself a pastor and wore a button reading “rebels for Christ”). It’s not that brides are burned in India as part of a Hindu ritual. And there’s no verse in the Koran that instructs Afghan thugs to throw acid in the faces of girls who dare to go to school. … Read entire article »

ISLAM – CAPITALISM OR SOCIALISM

Asghar Ali Engineer A few days ago a press conference was held in Mumbai by some Muslim organizations including some Muslim theologians claiming that Islam is against capitalism and imperialism and that we would launch a campaign against both. It is indeed a crude attempt to compare or contrast modern political ideologies with Islam which originated in 7th century Arabia. Islam has its central values like truth, justice and equality of all human beings. But these are core values of Islam which very favourably compare with modern concept of human rights, human dignity and social justice. But modern economic conditions and political ideologies have their own origin which has nothing to do with the economic conditions prevailing after Islam appears on the Arabian scene. … Read entire article »

50 Years Of Islamabad 1960-2010 : Capital Crown

Adnan Rehmat writes in The News  Taking a close look at a city is like reading the hopes, aspirations and pride of everyone who built it. Take a close look at Islamabad in all its pompous perplexity and clinical contradictions and not much popular ownership is apparent. Not that it prevents it from boasting a large number of peculiar characteristics even though these never show up in tourist brochures. It is, for instance, the ‘newest’ proper … Read entire article »

Is this Patriotism?

By Bilal Qureshi In  an article published in The New Republic, respected American journalist Nicholas Schmidle shares some of his experiences and observations about the over all paranoia and hysteria that has been increasingly visible across Pakistan’s electronic media. Specifically, Mr. Schmidle describes his awkward interaction with Shireen Mazari. Mazari had no information about Mr. Schmidle’s background, but she assumed, incorrectly of course, that Mr. Schmidle is working for C.I.A just because he was an American. This attitude towards foreigners, especially towards Americans is misguided. If everyone visiting Pakistan is working for Blackwater or C.I.A, Islamabad should not allow these people to travel to Pakistan. Otherwise, Pakistan’s public, particularly those who write opinion pieces or appear on Television should not accuse everyone of being a spy because this attitude is alienating … Read entire article »
