Chinese whispers of the press

A couple of weeks ago a screening of  “Taqwacore- The Birth of Punk Islam” was held at the National College of Arts Lahore. The documentary film offers an insight into the Muslim punk movement called Taqwacore, inspired by a novel by American Muslim Michael Muhammad Knight of the same name. The film primarily follows Muslim punk band The Kominas, along with Michael Muhammad Knight, on a road trip through the US and, in the latter half of the film, across Pakistan. Made by Canadian Pakistani, Umer Majeed, the film refers to the road movie convention as a spiritual journey and showcases an emrging Muslim subculture.

The screening has elicited negative response from Daily Ummat which has chosen, in the absence of any member of the core team behind the film, a member of the second unit production crew who organized the screening. The sheer dishonesty and witchhunt mentality of Ummat comes to fore in targeting a minor part of the production crew, an emerging filmmaker and activist who is recieving threatening phone calls no thanks to  the bigots at Ummat. Having said that, it should also be noted that Ummat based its story on BBC Urdu’s lopsided coverage of the screening. The BBC feature, written by their sports journalist,  has taken facts out of context, misrepresntated the premise of the film and unduly highlighting second unit production co-ordinator who happens to bear the brunt now.

Story: A Pakistani-born Canadian Muslim and director Omar Majeed has made a documentary film called Taqwacore which has made fun of Islam. Surprisingly, it has been revealed that the film was aired in Lahore. On Monday, it was premiered at the National College of Art’s auditorium, in which students from NCA were invited. Prior to this the film was aired at Boston film festival and in England. The film’s assistant director Ammar Aziz organised the film screening in Pakistan. Speaking to BBC, accursed Ammar Aziz said that this film displays a different side of Islam which has been called Taqwacore. This is a combination of Islam with punk culture. He further said that Taqwacore, the documentary, Michael Mohammad Knight is based on his band’s music and the band reflects this vision. In the film, Taqwacore, with its new view of music, tours the US in a bus. In the States, somewhere he gets great praise, but at some places, like Chicago, the Muslims rejected completely rejected this view. The band’s members in Pakistan visited various shrines in Pakistan. In the documentary, at the shrine of Shah Jamal in Lahore, it is shown that alike to punk culture, there is extensive usage of drugs here. At the mazar, people also consume ganja, charas and opium and the dhol players Piyo Saeein is also interviewed, in which nauzobillah, he says that God likes music. In the documentary, the members of taqwacore are on one hand shown praying namaz, and on the other hand, they do such things which are considered very bad by devout muslims. For example in the film, one female band member, who is a Muslim and a lesbian, accursed Ammar Aziz admitted that there are such views in the film which are not acceptable in Pakistani society. According to Ammar Aziz, this is why they will only show this film to those who can accept it. According to Ammar Aziz, according to their perception of Islam there is a message of art and music. امریکہ میں گیارہ ستمبر دو ہزار ایک کے واقعے کے بعد کی دنیا میں جہاں اسلام اور مسلمانوں کے خلاف امریکہ اور مغربی ممالک میں ایک رد عمل ظاہر ہوا وہیں اسلام کا خوشگوار چہرہ دنیا کے سامنے پیش کرنے کی کوششیں بھی بڑے پیمانے پر شروع ہو گئیں۔

اس فلم میں ایسے نظریات ہیں جو پاکستانی معاشرے میں قابل قبول نہیں

پاکستان اور ہندوستان نژاد امریکی مسلمان نوجوان موسیقاروں نے تقویٰ کور نامی میوزیکل بینڈ کے ذریعے دنیا کو بتانے کی کوشش کی ہے کہ مسلمان شدت پسند نہیں بلکہ موسیقی سے محبت کرتے ہیں۔

اس گروپ نے اسلام کی روح کو ایک نئے تصور میں ضم کرنے کو کوشش کی۔

پاکستانی نژاد کینیڈا کے ایک مسلمان ڈائریکٹر عمر مجید نے اس گروپ پر ایک دستاویزی فلم بنائی اس کا نام بھی تقوی کور ہے۔

امریکہ میں بوسٹن فلمی میلے اور انگلینڈ میں نمائش کے بعد اس فلم کا پریمیر شو نیشنل کالج آف آرٹس کے آڈیٹوریم میں پیر کو دکھایا گیا۔نیشنل کالج آف آرٹس میں پڑھنے والے طلبہ اور طالبات کی بڑی تعداد نے اس فلم کو دیکھا۔

تقویٰ کور نامی میوزیکل بینڈ کے ذریعے دنیا کو بتانے کی کوشش ہے کہ مسلمان شدت پسند نہیں بلکہ موسیقی سے محبت کرتے ہیں

اس فلم کے اسسٹنٹ ڈائریکٹر عمار عزیز اس دستاویزی فلم کو پاکستان میں دکھانے کا انتظام کر رہے ہیں۔

عمار عزیز کا کہنا ہے کہ یہ فلم اسلام کی ایک نئی ضمنی ثقافت کا احاطہ کرتی ہے جسے تقویٰ کور کا نام دیا گیا ہے۔یہ ایک آمیزہ ہے اسلام کے نظریات کا پنک کلچر کے ساتھ اور اس کا آغاز اس وقت ہوا جب ایک امریکی نو مسلم مائکل محمد نائیک نے اس نئے تصور کے بارے میں کتاب لکھی۔

عمار عزیز کا کہنا ہے کہ اگرچہ یہ ایک خیالی تصور ہے لیکن امریکہ میں اس پر کئی بینڈ بنے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ تقویٰ کور دستاویزی فلم مائیکل محمد نائیک کے اپنے موسیقی کے بینڈ پر مبنی ہے اور یہ بینڈ اسی تصور کی عکاسی کرتا ہے 

عمار عزیز نے پاکستان میں فلم کی ریلیز کرنے کی وجہ یہ بتائی کہ کیونکہ اس بینڈ کے زیادہ تر رکن پاکستانی خاندانوں سے ہیں اور اس فلم کا نصف حصہ پاکستان میں بنایا گیا ہے اس لیے ہم نے سوچا کہ اسے پاکستان میں بھی دکھایا جائے۔

اس فلم میں دکھایا گیا کہ تقوی کور بینڈ اپنے اس نئے نظریے کی موسیقی کے ساتھ ایک بس میں امریکہ کے طول و عرض میں گیا۔ امریکہ میں اسے کہیں تو خوب پزیرائی ملی لیکن کچھ جگہوں جیسے کہ شکاگو وہاں کے مسلمانوں سے اس نئے تصور کو بالکل مسترد کر دیا۔

پاکستان میں اس گروپ کے اراکین مختلف مزاروں اور درگاہوں پر گئے۔ اس دستاویزی فلم میں لاہور میں واقع ایک بزرگ بابا شاہ جمال کے مزار میں دکھایا گیا کہ جیسے پنک کلچر میں نشہ آور ادویات کا استعال کافی ہے۔ وہاں اس مزار پر بھی لوگ گانجہ چرس اور افیون کا استعمال کر رہے ہیں اور ڈھول بجانے والے پپو سائیں سے بھی بات کی جس میں انہوں نے کہا کہ مالک کائنات کو موسیقی پسند ہے۔

دستاویزی فلم میں دکھایا گیا کہ پاکستان میں کہیں تو تقوی کور گروپ کو پزیرائی ملی تو کہیں انہیں سخت ناپسند کیا گیا۔

اس دستاویزی فلم میں تقوی کور گروپ کے اراکین کو ایک طرف تو نماز پڑتے دکھایا گیا ہے اور دوسری جانب وہ وہ کام بھی کرتے ہیں جو راسخ العقیدہ مسلمانوں میں انتہائی برے سمجھے جاتے ہیں جیسے کہ اس گروپ میں ایک خاتون رکن جو مسلمان بھی ہیں اور ہم جنس پرست بھی۔

اس فلم میں ایسے نظریات ہیں جو پاکستانی معاشرے میں قابل قبول نہیں۔

اسی لیے اس فلم کا پریمیر نیشنل کالج آف آرٹس لاہور میں کیا گیا۔ عمار عزیز کا کہنا ہے کہ نیشنل کالج آف آرٹس میں اس فلم کو جن لوگوں نے دیکھا ان میں تو اس کی قبولیت تھی لیکن اس میں کوئی شک نہیں کہ عام پاکستانی شاید اس کو ہضم نہ کر سکیں اس لیے عمار عزیز کے مطابق پاکستان میں انہی فلم بینوں کو یہ فلم دکھائیں گے جو اسے قبول کر سکیں۔

پاکستان میں اس دستاویزی فلم کو کتنی پزیرائی ملتی ہے یہ تو ابھی واضح نہیں البتہ اس فلم کے اسسٹنٹ ڈائریکٹر عمار عزیز کے خیال میں یہ نیا تصور اسلام کو شدت پسند مذہب سمجھنے کے خیالات میں تبدیلی کی ایک کوشش ہے کیونکہ اس میں آرٹ اور موسیقی کے ذریعے امن کا پیغام دیا گیا ہے۔
