The barbarians have attacked another shrine – no respite for Karachi
Raza Rumi Karachi’s famous shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi was attacked a while ago. Over 60 people are injured and 12 are dead. After Lahore’s Data Darbar attacks, this is a trend that is gaining an ugly momentum. We condemn this act and mourn the deaths of innocent people who were visiting to perhaps allay their stress and seek some peace from the place. Shrines are not just religious – these are public spaces and also cultural markers. What a shame that terrorists are trying to destroy our culture and turning us into a bunch of afraid people living in a fractured and violent society. Thursdays are special for shrine-goers. And this is what suits the terrorists’ agenda. This is not the first time that such a heinous tragedy has occurred. We … Read entire article »

Musharraf’s Core Constituency and His Prospects
By Raza Habib Raja I remember watching his last speech in a crowded room and also the huge roar when he announced his resignation. Just two years have passed and it’s amazing the way the fortunes have turned (or have they?). If election were held on facebook, Mr Musharraf’s only tough competition would come from Imran Khan!!. The “enlightened moderates” are up in arms and ready to wage a struggle (unfortunately or shall I say fortunately on facebook only) to bring their leader back. How do you explain Mr Muharraf and his sophisticated and yet confused core constituency? The constituency comprises of the segment of upwardly mobile urban middleclass, with which he has experienced such a love hate relationship. It was elated when he deposed Nawaz Sharif and was swearing against him … Read entire article »

Unpacking the governance debate
Raza Rumi If the intent of the unregulated media and a recalcitrant establishment is to dismiss the government to achieve better governance then this is at best a delusional goal Recent weeks have witnessed a supercilious debate on how the current government’s misgovernance is a potent reason to boot it out. Governance is about decisions, resources and management of public affairs. The sad reality is that Pakistan’s media now controls and spins the public discourse on these issues. The popular media never wanted this government to begin with. Since 2007, it sided with the ‘clean’ and morally correct lawyers’ movement that presented an alternative to the corrupt politicians and shunned the 2008 election. First, it vilified Benazir Bhutto for making a deal … Read entire article »
Destination Dubai For Our Bhai
I read the news item In Thursday Sept. 30, 2010′s “The News” about MQM’s Supremo, Altaf Bhai’s potential plan of changing his Postal Code. http://www.thenews.com.pk/30-09-2010/Top-Story/975.htm Like any other political observer, I was perplexed, why would a British citizen decide to leave England after almost two decades. If it is Dr. Farooq’s murder and security concerns, then Britain is providing full security protocol to former President Musharraf, who is not a British citizen. Some would argue that former President was a “Head Of State” and supported the US led and UK supported, GWOT, so he is entitled to such pleasantries. Mr. Hussain has been running his party from its London Secretariat very ably, for so many years. This sudden change of venue may have something more … Read entire article »

Afghanistan: Why Bangladesh needs to get engaged!
Air Cdre (Retd) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury Should Bangladesh send troops to Afghanistan or not is a question that has raised a controversy over the last few days. Since the news item appeared on 27 September 2010 of the US request for possible military assistance to the ongoing operations in Afghanistan, there has been a spate of comments from different quarters. From an outright ‘No’ to “limited engagement” in Afghanistan – the views have been diverse, and rightly so. I have often spoken in the past about getting engaged both in Iraq and Afghanistan. My view is that we need to get engaged in a substantive way in Afghanistan as soon as possible; indeed we should have been engaged years ago. Afghanistan is a battle-ground today between the forces of … Read entire article »

"Hello.. Its Me Again: Says Mush"
By D. Asghar Approximately 11 years ago a flight from Colombo to Karachi brought a person, who decided to repeat the history of so called, “bloodless coups” in Pakistan. A person who trampled the law of the land under his boots and promised to start a “clean slate” by eliminating “corruption” and by putting “Pakistan first.” 11 years later, the same person has decided to repeat the same message. The only difference is, the venue is UK, 11 years have elapsed and people have seen, lived and experienced his “enlightened moderation.” Not to mention, even if he wants to, he cannot just land in Karachi as the circumstances are quite different. It is like “old wine in the same old bottle.” Amazingly, the gentlemen who had the least regard for democracy at … Read entire article »

Working with the victims of the disaster – Part 2
Usman Ahmad’s diaries Day 2 The day starts immediately after Fajr. I could have done with a little more sleep but given where I am and why I have come it would be churlish to complain. It has rained for a second night and the cool air gently wraps around our tired frames. The weather it seems is once again our friend, but in all honesty, the last thing that this region of the world needs right now is more water. Basti Rindaan and Basti Sohrani are neighboring villages situated on the banks of the Indus. Almost everything here is destroyed except the spirit of the inhabitants which is resolute and firm. I am told that 6 ft of water inundated the town and spread for many kilometers. Houses were crushed and crops … Read entire article »

Yuppies of the Urban Middleclass, Unwashed and Illiterate Masses and their right to vote
This article of mine was originally published in Express Tribune with a different title. However in the light of some comments on tribune and face book, I think this is a better title. I am amazed how condescending these yuppies are towards common man’s right to vote. Frankly I am no Zardari Lover, but I will defend to death his right to stay as President as long as he has the votes. By Raza Habib Raja Right now the news of possible regime change are dominating the mainstream media and active enthusiasm for that by some quarters shows that euphoria after the elections of18th February 2008 has fully subsided and has been replaced by plain disgust. If the demographics of the wary public are to be taken into consideration, it is again … Read entire article »

Beyond the boundary
By Feisal Hussain Naqvi Some weeks ago, an English newspaper published an expose of a sting operation in which one of their reporters pretended to be a bookie and paid GBP 150,000 to one Mazhar Majeed, the agent for several Pakistani players. To demonstrate his credibility as a match-fixer, Majeed offered to have Pakistani players bowl no-balls at specific moments during the fourth test match. The offer by Majeed and his acceptance of the money are on video. … Read entire article »
