ghar ko aag lag gayee ghar kay chiragh say

By YLH

I read Aitzaz Ahsan’s “Indus Saga” and instantly became his fan. Here was our answer to Jawaharlal Nehru. Here was a secular liberal Pakistani nationalist who believed in Jinnah’s Pakistan and a democratic civilised polity. Indus Saga remains in my view one of the finest books on the creation of Pakistan written by a Pakistani politician.

When Aitzaz Ahsan took on the cause of the Chief Justice, I followed him for he appeared to be the voice of reason and sanity. I believed that so long as he was there , we could hope that Pakistani liberals would prevail on what increasingly looked like a reactionary movement. So we kept supporting him.

Now Aitzaz Ahsan has let us down. He was the chiragh of our house and now he has burnt down the last citadel of hope as well. As a lawyer and as an author I am today truly broken.

Blasphemy law should remain intact: Aitzaz

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The blasphemy law (295-C) should remain intact, and if Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer committed any mistake or blasphemy, instead of killing him he should have been punished under the law of the country, Pakistan People’s Party senior leader Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan said.

While talking to reporters at the Supreme Court building, Aitzaz said no amendment of any kind should be brought in the blasphemy law and it should remain intact at every cost. He said that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani had given assurance for implementing Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif’s agenda, and therefore the PML-N chief should also support the government.

To a question, Aitzaz said that he had not been offered the governorship of Punjab. “Better and more eligible people than me are waiting for the governorship,” he added. Aitzaz further said that President Asif Ali Zardari as the co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party would decide the appointment of the Punjab governor.

there you have it!! another idol with feet of clay. politics does that to even the best of men, what to talk of pretenders?!

YLH, no need to feel heart-broken. AA miaN is a politician like all other politicians. The main thing to remember about politicians is they seldom say what they really believe. They usually only say what they really believe will help them make political hay. He figures that at this time, the practicality of amending 295-C is rather low so he is merely indulging in a bit of limelight-grabbing (I think).

Alakshyendra, you are not helping me in my job of cheering up Yasser miaN. Go away!

Problem with Pakistan : Too much hatred. Hatred against India. Hatred against non-muslims. Hatred against America. Hatred against Shias/Ahmadis. Hatred against liberals. Hatred against hindus. Hatred against women…..

    …where/when will it stop ?

  5. BJ Kumar United States Internet Explorer Windows says:

Ranger, that is simply not true. That hatred part is mythical. Most folks just wish to live in peace, make a living and support their little ones. The fringe elements are the problem. It is important to not mistake the madness of the fringes as the voice of the mainstream. The real weakness is the inability of the folks in power to stop the fringe elements from grabbing the center stage.

    Yasser Pai,

I know that you have been a fan of AA and I was always afraid that one day you may have an heartbreak and there it is. But Alex and Beej (right for once) have explained it well-politics does this to the best of people. Without realising it you have said something very significant:

Here was our answer to Jawaharlal Nehru.

JLN (much as I dislike him) was a genuinely secular person yet it did not prevent him:

From caving into mullahs both pre-1947 and post 1947 (personal laws et al)
From accepting Feroze Khan as his damaad.

Let us accept that the best of politicians will have feet of clay. But hope that those who dont wish to run for office and can speak their conscience (like you) will create enuff pressure on rest of the society.

    Godspeed.
    Regards

  12. PMA United States Internet Explorer Windows says:

Aitzaz Ahsan is considered a Center-Left Moderate. A good decent man in my opinion. I also loved his book Indus Saga. (Where is Vajra.) Pakistan needs to move away from Islam-centric to the Indus-centric narrative, the narrative advanced by Aitzaz. I support him as President of Pakistan. If not at least as Chairman of PPP. Oops I forgot. That position is hereditary and belongs to Prince Bilawal and his future children.

  14. Lutf United States Internet Explorer Windows says:

Aitizaz Ahsan has as much right to be a hypocrite as any other politician. Even Asma Jehanagir has gone silent after observing the reaction to Taseer’s assasination.

  15. Straight-Talk India Google Chrome Windows says:

If Aitzaz Ahsan has changed the position, I doubt that it is his real decision/character and/or due to fear/pressure from fundamentalists. Although nobody can change color like chameleon and our politicians. But AA being a lawyer and his contribution in the struggle for Judiciary against Musharraf makes me suspicious on his action, it may be a pragmatic decision where sometimes it is OK to take retreat for sometimes to prepare for final assault.

    @PMA

My heart is too full for words. It is difficult for a friend of Pakistan, a Pakistan that we see as composed of civilised, lofty intellects such as you, to remain unmoved by recent events. If I could pray, I would have prayed. Nothing remains but to hope, with every particle of my self, that those whom I have grown to cherish will come through these times safely.

  17. Salman Arshad Pakistan Mozilla Firefox Ubuntu Linux says:

I think he is one of some PPP activists who want to support the party at any cost simply because it is the only liberal party left, whatever is left of it; there are some PPP supporters at present who think that way.

His decision is probably more towards being pragmatic.

Yasser, maybe you should try to get in contact with him to know about his views more clearly. Times are such that misunderstandings like these can weaken the cause.

    Vajra (January 11, 2011 at 9:38 pm):
Sir, let me share something with you. In 2007 Aitzaz was leading the case against Musharraf in Supreme Court. I had the opportunity to watch the proceedings as an invited guest. During the breaks Aitzaz was kind enough to sit down and informally discuss the political situation in Pakistan at that time. He is a very wise, stable and rational man; the kind of man you want to have on your team. He has grip on the pulse of the nation. I wish he plays a bigger role in PPP. But if the Party continues to be a Bhutto family heirloom as it is, men like Aitzaz will be continuously sidelined. Zardari does not have the self confidence required of a leader to allow people like Aitzaz to be in the front. However it is the job of the progressives to support men like Aitzaz. Salman on the other hand had very little popular support. His appeal was limited to the fashionable circles of Lahore. He suited the Family very well; he was dispensable. Now that his death has stirred up some raw emotions, perhaps it is not the time to dissect. But Pakistan Watchers like yourself need not to have a heavy heart. Pakistan is much more than one man. It is a big nation capable of self rejuvenation. Although slightly conservative, it is a moderate nation. The extremists on both sides maybe noisy, but are in very small numbers. A moderate Pakistan will always prevail.

I was AA fan too in the CJ restoration days. Sorry I am disppointed, Mr. AA. Nobody is denying that blasphemy is wrong. But on the other hand, is it punsihable by death? What burden of proof and evidence is required for the conviction? That’s the question.

  21. Humanity United States Mozilla Firefox Ubuntu Linux says:

@D. Asghar wrote “Nobody is denying that blasphemy is wrong. But on the other hand, is it punsihable by death? What burden of proof and evidence is required for the conviction? That’s the question.”

Blasphemy is gravest of the human crimes. Allah(SWT) has spared humans from the burden of proof of blasphemy because Allah(SWT) knows best the intentions of the accused blasphemer. Allah(SWT) even spared His beloved Prophet (SAW) by telling the Holy Prophet (SAW), ‘forgive them and turn away from them’ and the Holy Prophet(SAW) obeyed. Because of the severity of the crime of blasphemy, Allah(SWT) has reserved for Himself the right to punish the blasphemer as He sees fit. God Almighty has prepared an abasing punishment for such people in the Hereafter, as God Almighty says in the Holy Quran:
“On the Day of Resurrection, He will disgrace them; they will enter the gates of Hell to abide therein. Evil, indeed is the abode of the proud.” (16:28,30)

Islam categorically forbids any form of coercion in religion. This injunction declared in the Quran can only be upheld if a human is absolved from the responsibility of judging the blasphemers.

Judgment of blasphemy in the hands of humans turns a society into a barbaric mob and spectators, as is evident from the current state of the nation. The soul of humanity dies when humans play God. The spirituality of Islam is massacred and it turns into a rotting carcass when godly humans take upon themselves to judge of the faith of others.

One can not find a justification for the blasphemy law no mater which way one looks. The blasphemy and similar laws meddle with the divine realm and mess with the absolute Unity of Allah(SWT) and His Oneness. All such laws can not be endorsed as Islamic laws. These laws must be repealed. Only then can this misguided nation be navigated back to reform itself as a tolerant, forgiving, humane society. Only then can these hallmarks of Islam be showcased as a religion peace.

Any human is indeed anguished when senseless blood is shed in the name of religion. How can one with an iota of conscious play political chess, while innocent heads are rolling off the guillotine of the righteous? The political opportunists have blood on their hands, no matter how much statesmanship or political acumen they pretend to exercise. They may plot and plan, but they must not forget that the master planner is Allah(SWT).

Allah(SWT) is indeed sufficient for His servants. His are mysterious ways of working. Allah(SWT) will guide this lost people out of the quagmire that their ignorance and arrogance have gotten into. He forgives and His servants can always count on His divine help and mercy, inshAllah!

  24. I did not reAd the INDU$ $Aga. bUT in 1998 hajji Aitzaz Ahson Sahib, appeared in a case in which I have had the world-wide (unjust Enrichmemt) forex assets of Mohtrima Benazeer Bhutto-Zardari and Her NucleAR fAMILY … all frozen by Lahore High Court (the Justice whoi stood uop, Ihsanulk Haq, MushrraF AFTER COMING TO OPOWER REMOVED HIM FROM lhc) and Ahsonji arrived IN THE COURTROOM with an arm-aida (!@) of some 300 jeering=jovial jayawe-laws (an american lawyer interning with me commented that she had been to indian high courts’ hearings in Simla and the Indian Punjab, but this RERSEMBLED more like a fish-market). He argued PRETTY WELL (I was not formally noticed by the High Court , I dropped in on a courtiouys watching brief as a Caveat calling inbetweenity! eg See Indian CPC new Section 48-A) how Mohtrimaji would encounter hardships et cetera; then he graciously blurted “Now I will put Mr Jafree under Surgery!”. I on the spot asked aloud: IS HE A VAKEEL or A NAWEE from GUJRATH?”. Ahsonji froze in his Swiss Bally Shoes. Lost! And walked out alone swimming in his own sweaT ( FRAGRANT PASEENA, of course!).
rECENTLY i READ that Aitzaz paid income tax on Rs 15 Million that he obtained as fees from The HARRIS steal Mills) … I dont believe the Harris Fraudster-Ownere whjo says he opaid Rs 30 Million nto Aitzaz.
But onbe question did occur to me. Would I have accepted this paltry sum. The answer is a firm no!! I would have told the Harris Bastards that they have no cause or case; that they get out of my office (inb fact I would not have allowed them in!) and promptly should repay what they swindled of this poor, exhausted and plundered, gasping nation … half of which is now going without 2 square meals a day!!

VAKIL means facilitator; it is high name of God Almighty ,,,, those who worship the Rising $$$$ons and the Rising $$$$$un … are not worthy of such designation in my humble view (or Sing Along With Mitch!!!), we are too easily impressed with shoon-schon.However, probe a little and in stread of phoenix you are nixed with dust and encounter holy dirt.

Hamdani Sahib spent lot of his scholarly time and worthily-striving in nobly discovering that I never studied at Harvard … perhaps he should now look into those blokes who charge outrageous fees in crores and plead immoral and unethical matters. Nonetheless, we worship(ed!) them as our role (or rolled-gold) models.
