Seeking Jinnah’s Pakistan In Zia’s Pakistan
By D. Asghar Jinnah Sahib’s untimely death and Pakistan’s loss of Quaid’s vision is often debated at this forum. Many Pakistanis, including myself find it quite disheartening that a sound and solid ideology went completely astray after his demise. It is an irony, that we as a nation never collectively, pay heed to the original ideas and reasons why this country came into being. Agreed that the subsequent leaders who succeeded Jinnah Sahib, were silenced by force and those who were left were not able to put it into a path that Quaid had envisioned. Arguably, the blood that many gave to reach the Wagah border, hoping to reach their promised land, was shed in vain. The chaos that ensued after one blow or the other, the intrigues that followed and the bitter … Read entire article »

Jinnah’s Pakistan as a rallying cry
Yasser Latif Hamdani writing in Daily Times: Salmaan Taseer was a man of great moral clarity whether his detractors care to admit as much or not. He was from an increasingly rare breed of idealists who believed in Pakistan as envisaged by Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, i.e. a liberal democratic state where faith would be a personal matter. I submit that it was this belief in Pakistan’s destiny that drove Salmaan Taseer to stand up for the rights of minorities in Pakistan. Therefore, when his children write that their father died for Pakistan, Pakistan’s self-appointed guardians of ideology should take note and learn a thing or two. The need of the hour is for Pakistanis to stand up for that ideal, for this is our only homeland and if we do not … Read entire article »

Jinnah’s Pakistan?
Ardeshir Cowasjee Dawn THE following excerpts beg comments from all those who have been or are now occupying the power seats of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. From Mohammad Ali Jinnah`s presidential address at the All-India Muslim League session in Delhi in April 1943: “The minorities are entitled to get a definite assurance or to ask: `Where do we stand in the Pakistan that you visualise?` That is an issue of giving a definite and clear assurance to the minorities. We have done it. We have passed a resolution that the minorities must be protected and safeguarded to the fullest extent, and as I said before, any civilised government will do it and ought to do it. So far as we are concerned, our own history and our prophet have given the … Read entire article »

Despite Recession the Auto Industry is Still Thriving
PTH report Below is an interesting article from Dawn about the increase in the sale of cars during the past six months. The article quotes that during the past six months Pakistanis spent around Rs. 60 billion on the purchase of motor vehicles. The interesting thing is that in the past Pakistan’s car buying spree used to be backed by high availability of consumer credit at low interest rates. However, after a hike in interest rates and rising NPLs (Non Performing Loans), the consumer credit bubble has been burst and now banks have become very selective in giving auto loans. The current surge of buying has chiefly been cash based. While it is a good indicator showing that the auto industry has largely been insulated from the economic downturn but at … Read entire article »

The Killing Fields Of Karachi
By D. Asghar Electronic media is ablaze with recent senseless killings in the Port City. Nobody knows, who comes from nowhere, kills people indiscriminately and disappears. These victims are people who are in down trodden areas of the city, barely trying to cope with the insanity called life. The sight of living conditions, that many face in S.I.T.E area, Orangi Town, Baldia Township and Sohrab Goth, would make us all appreciate our lives. The question that often remains unanswered is why them? These are not wealthy people, they have barely enough to buy the meal for the day. Why all of this then and who benefits from these so called, “target killings.”. Our very own Interior Minister has been told by his “seventh sense”, that there is a “hidden hand”, a “third power”, … Read entire article »

The Chronicle of a Death Foretold
By Muhammad Hassan Miraj And as the governor moved out of the restaurant, he was shot several times by one of his own guards. The police gathered, rush of movements, channels getting crazy, arrests, ambulance sirens and this is how a murder well-thought-out was executed. The few last acts of this well scripted play are yet to be aired. For example, there are few arrests which will be made. The provocative literature will be recovered from Qadri`s place. Few talks here and there will be connected. Contacts, call records, coordination points. It will be established that the act of Mumtaz Qadri was self motivational and there is enough motive to support it. There is motivation to kill, the principal accused has surrendered and the weapon has been recovered but there are questions … Read entire article »

Why the West? Race, Religion, Culture and Development
By Dr. Niaz Murtaza Until East Asia’s rise, white-majority countries monopolized progress, allowing white supremacists to claim race-based differences in IQs. However, scientific evidence quickly refuted this theory and soon no serious writer dared propound racist theories. Attention then shifted to the supposed superiority of Christianity, especially of the ‘Protestant ethic’, in facilitating progress. This theory receives some backing in the west even today, despite its weaknesses. First, there is an absence of rigorous empirical evidence. Sans evidence, proponents provide a selective, self-serving listing of teachings from different religions to show that Christianity encourages development-friendly attributes, such as hard work and risk-inclination, while others do not. Thus, some argue that Islam discourages risk-taking and personal responsibility by propagating fate. However, like other Abrahamic religions, Islamic teachings about ultimate judgment based on worldly … Read entire article »

A Statement by the Asian Human Rights Commission PAKISTAN: Failure to take action against fundamentalists makes a mockery of the law A YouTube presentation recently found on the internet shows Mumtaz Quadri, the assassin of the slain governor, Salman Taseer, singing in the custody of the police during his interrogation. Pathetic Role of the Media
Written By: Riaz Ali Toori “Pathetic Role of the Media” Historically, Judiciary, Legislature and Executive were considered as the three main organs of a state. With great advancement in the field of print and electronic media, the world has become a global village in which the Media has emerged as the fourth and powerful pillar of any government. Perhaps it has proved to be more powerful than all the other three pillars as it has directly influenced the ideas and thoughts of people from villages to towns and towns to cities. It has benumbed the edifice of norms and culture as well, wielding direct sway on the public and assuming the role of the fourth pillar of a society. Third world countries have also been hit by the revolution of but it seems … Read entire article »

Musicians Condemn Salmaan Taseer’s Assassination
Pakistan will not be a country ruled by mullahs with a divine mission, said Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the father of the nation. What about Jinnah’s Pakistan? Islam teaches peace and forgiveness not revenge. Islam teaches that God is Al-Ghaffur “The All-Forgiving”, and is the original source of all forgiveness (ghufran غفران). Forgiveness often requires the repentance of those being forgiven. Depending on the type of wrong committed, forgiveness can come either directly from Allah, or from one’s fellow man who received the wrong. In the case of divine forgiveness, the asking for divine forgiveness via repentance is important. In the case of human forgiveness, it is important to both forgive, and to be forgiven. The Qur’an never allows for violent behavior on the part of Muslim believers. The Qur’an … Read entire article »

Pakistani Muslims with the Pope for religious freedom and repeal of blasphemy law
by Jibran Khan Lahore (AsiaNews) – Respect for the words of Benedict XVI, appreciation for his call to repeal the blasphemy law – used to “settle personal disputes” – and defence for the Christian minority, a victim of violence and abuse. Religious leaders and Islamic scholars in Pakistan – along with human rights activists and members of civil society – have distanced themselves from fundamentalist threats against the pope, and expressed their appreciation of his campaign … Read entire article »
