Teaching students about Ranjeet or Bhagat Singh would not harm Pakistan’

ISLAMABAD:Teaching students about Ranjeet or Bhagat Singh would not harm Pakistan in any way. A distorted version of history is no longer relevant in the post 18th amendment era. This was said by Senator Raza Rabbani, the architect of the 18th constitutional amendment, on Friday at the roundtable workshop titled “Education in Federally Organised Countries”. The workshop was organised by the Centre for Civic Education Pakistan (CCEP) and the Forum of Federations in collaboration with German Foreign Office.Click here to read complete article. … Read entire article »

Parachinar—-A Sad Story

By Riaz Ali Toori: Parachinar, Pakistan’s paradise is very significant due to its strategic location, bordering Afghanistan, 250 km west of Islamabad. Lying in the upper part of Kurram Agency, it is blessed with natural beauty, is part of Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan and its geographical coordinates are 33° 53′ 51″ North, 70° 6′ 0″ East. People there are friendly and eager to acquire knowledge. There are good opportunities as well as encouragement for females aspiring for education. Each year students in hundreds leave the town for other cities of Pakistan in pursuit of standard education. A good many members of the young generation are presently studying in almost all Cadet Colleges, medical colleges, and engineering universities across the country. Remarkably, there are no restrictions, usually in existence in the … Read entire article »

Peace through Business

Peace through Business

by Rameez Karamat Ali (@itsrkali)   NEW DELHI: Pakistani companies may soon be able to invest in India as the government plans to strike off the country from a negative list that debarred investments from across the border. The symbolic move is not likely to yield fat investments into the country, but offer a political dividend to warm the often-frosty ties between the two neighbors.   Reference: http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2011-08-22/news/29914920_1_negative-list-mfn-status-india-and-pakistan    Now the basic question which will rise in our minds that how … Read entire article »

Ground 0 – Badin

Ground 0 – Badin

By F.K Two hundred people have fallen prey to the devastation that hit Badin and other areas in Sindh by more than 1,000 millimeters of rain in the last month. This is the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in Sindh. Compare this to the 70 odd millimeters of rain that has fallen in Karachi over the past few days and one begins to realize the magnitude of the catastrophe Sindh is facing. I was in Badin earlier this week … Read entire article »

A Souvenir from the Punjab

By Kiran Rezvi It started when my nephew expressed his wish to travel and perform with a dance troupe; the entire family came in to offer unsolicited advice.  Some typical macho males were against a boy dancing, others more religious were against the satanic display of music and dance. However, surprisingly enough, the biggest opposition came from the ‘nationalists’, who raised the point that dancing would have been ok, had it not been tap dancing. “Why can’t he join a ‘bhang.ra’ dance group? Our culture is far better than Irish,” came a passionate statement from a cousin. I normally stay away from such debates, but her comments caught my attention, particularly the one that described bhang.ra as ‘our’ culture. Nanaji, my grandfather, was a vibrant character. He used to enthrall us with … Read entire article »

Considering Slackistan

Considering Slackistan

By Zia Ahmad Slacker: i: a person who shuns or avoids work or other obligations; ii: a person who avoids military service; iii: or an educated person who is antimaterialistic, purposeless, apathetic and usually works in a  dead-end job.   In 1991, the beginning of Richard Linklater’s seminal feature debut Slacker offered a clear denotation of its title. The film showcased all the variants on the meaning of the word inherently attached with the spirit of Generation X and subsequently … Read entire article »

The Norway Massacre: Blowback from West’s Islamophobia

By Faheem Khan On July 22, 2011, the worst terrorist incident occurred in the mainland Europe since Madrid train bombing of 2004. A 32-year-old Norwegian, Anders Behring Breivik, detonated a bomb in Oslo and engaged in a shooting spree in the island of Utoya, killing 76 innocent Norwegians. It now transpired that the perpetrator was motivated by anti-Muslim, anti-immigration websites of the U.S. and Europe. Since 9/11 terrorist attacks, the whole public discourse in the West has been shot through with Muslim hatred. Originally anti-Muslim bias was spewed by marginal media outlets such as Frontpage Magazine. Later it entered into mainstream media. For a full decade anti-Muslim propaganda has been dinned into the ears of western public. The obvious result is the hostility of the public against Islam. When the whole … Read entire article »

Is there a cure for Pakistan’s culture of victimization?

By Saad Hafiz: While periods of insecurity are common among a nation’s citizenry; the Pakistani culture of victimization has permeated the national discourse and sapped the Nation’s spirit. “They are doing it to us again,” “there’s nothing we can do,” “it’s all their fault” have become part of the political lexicon when discussing the complex issues facing Pakistan. Contrast the prevailing negativity to Mr. Jinnah’s Eid-ul-Fitr message to the nation on 27th August, 1948. “We can look to the future with robust confidence provided we do not relax and fritter away our energies in internal dissension. There never was greater need for discipline and unity in our ranks. It is only with united effort and faith in our destiny that we shall be able to translate the Pakistan of our dreams into … Read entire article »

Anniversary of the Sep 7 1974

By Mohammed Rafiuddin: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” Joseph Goebbels On 4 September 2011, Mr Naseem Ahmad Butt (55) was brutally murdered in Faisalabad, Pakistan. He was sleeping in his home when four unknown assailants jumped over the wall at 1am and fired at him. He was shot in his stomach and chest. The assailants immediately fled the scene. The Jinnah Debate

The Jinnah Debate

By Yasser Latif Hamdani (Courtesy Daily Times)  Ayesha Jalal, probably the finest historian that this country has produced in 64 years, said in a recent interview that the Jinnah discourse as Ahmad Ali Khalid put it in his article ‘The Jinnah discourse’ (Daily Times, August 24, 2011) makes her hopeful that Pakistan will at some point hark back to the original vision that Quaid-e-Azam gave this country. As Mr Khalid put it in his well argued … Read entire article »

‘Hurricane Mirza!’

By Ghazala Akbar: Our capacity for generating self- inflicted crises continues to grow. Even by our own standards, this has been a remarkable year. We began with the assassination of the Punjab Governor. In February, the unsavoury Raymond Davis affair had the country fuming. The ides of March ushered in the murder of the Minorities Minister. May Day brought the OBL fiasco. June saw the attack on the Karachi naval base and the killing of an unarmed man by trigger-happy Rangers. July and August were dominated by strife in Karachi, bomb explosions, two high – profile kidnappings and floods. Just when you think it cannot possibly get any worse– you are right. It doesn’t. Enter Zulfiqar Mirza. When a senior Minister in the Provincial Sindh Cabinet, husband of the Speaker of the … Read entire article »
