The ‘Great Nepal-India-Pakistan Spinal Beetle Drive’ is a journey from Kathmandu Valley through the Indus-Ganga plain to Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, starting on 4 November and scheduled to end on 16 November 2011. The drive will take place in a 1973 model Volkswagen Beetle, which previously has supported similar fundraisings ride – to Dhaka, in 2002 and 2005.

The drive is sponsored by the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre-Nepal, which has faced a sudden need to expand its services, being required to grow from 39 to 51 beds. The VW Beetle will be driven by journalist, writer and civil-rights activist Kanak Mani Dixit, accompanied by Shanta Dixit, educator. Both are Board Members of the Spinal Centre, which was started in 2001 after Kanak survived a trekking accident that resulted in spinal injury. A back-up jeep will be driven by Suman Khadka, with passengers Naresh Nakarmi (VW Beetle specialist) and Eelum Dixit (for media contact).
The three-point goal of the Spinal Beetle Drive is to:
a) Raise USD 110,000 for the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre, at the ‘rate’ of USD 100 per mile, from friends and supporters all over the world. The total driving distance from Kathmandu to Peshawar is 1100 miles.
b) Raise awareness regarding spinal-injury prevention, care and rehabilitation along the route – from Kathmandu through Lucknow, Agra, Delhi, Lahore, Rawalpindi/Islamabad and up to Peshawar.
