Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s Flight To PTI

As expected, Mr. Qureshi made his much awaited decision to join, Imran Khan’s PTI at Gothki. The twitter sphere went ablaze with tweeps (including myself) registering their comments. Mostly being critical of his decision to join the now perceived as the “Establishment’s Party.” The followers of PTI take major offense to that allegation and deny it vehemently. They attribute it to the charisma and character of our former Cricket skipper.

Ironically, Pakistan has always had a history of “King’s Parties.” All Muslim Leagues with the alphabet soups were the brain children of many infamous smooth operators. As a fellow blogger said , the most appropriate name of this party would be PML-I, but I digress.

If truth be told, Imran Khan has been trying his luck for last 15 years in the political arena. One may either give him a trophy for the patience and tenacity. At least agree to this much, that his sudden rise and ability to attract the dissidents of other parties, begs a serious question.

There has been plenty of analysis and discussion behind the sudden rise of a political non entity like Imran Khan. But that’s not the point of discussion here. The people were mocking SMQ’s political jumps from Muslim League to PPP and now to PTI.

In all honesty, whatever his reasons are, and he may be termed as a smooth operator, an opportunist or what have you, but if it suits him, so be it. He may come up with whatever reasons or use whatever excuse to ditch his former party to join the new bandwagon, he is completely entitled to.

Yes as a society we may be tired and dissatisfied with the so called, political process. The steady game of politicians to switch their allegiances, may seem disgusting and appalling, yet it is a system that we need to improve and perfect.

As I exchanged comments with a very able friend on Twitter, it may be this re-branding what he needed. If the rumor mill is to be believed, then many more may be in the line to get on board, on this “Change Express.” It may seem to many as a short sighted move and plain old hypocrisy, the short answer to that is , “so be it.” Its not the first time that this has happened and it is not going to be the last either.

What the general masses tend to forget in the heat of the moment is; the ultimate power to accept or reject anyone is in their hands. Like it or not that ballot box is the life line to all these leaders, including SMQ.

Those who may argue that his followers are going to vote for him, no matter what. Well in that case, do your part to help his opponent make it. If that’s a far cry, then still do not give up on the process altogether. The process may have its flaws, but with the information revolution, the paradigm is shifting and trust me it will engulf Ghotki as well. Remain hopeful, the glass me not be half full as of yet, but each incoming drop is making the difference.

I would like to draw the attention of the Pakistani nation towards the talk of the town, which is Imran Khan’s ‘Pakistan Bachao Tehreek’ (Save Pakistan Movement). In every meeting and discussion, I often hear about the attendance at Minar-e-Pakistan and it seems that this power show is becoming the basis of support for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). One sensible quarter has asked for an effective plan and strategy on how Imran Khan will change the system. I, too, have my concerns and would like to ask Imran Khan Supporters, who think that he will bring about a 180 degree change in the direction of the country, about all the tall claims that he has made in the past that have not yet been accomplished. I am still waiting for Imran Khan to share the details of the model houses and/or villages for the flood affected people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southern Punjab in 2010, for which he had collected billions of rupees and said that he will put everything in black and white. I am still waiting for Imran Khan to visit and assist the flood affected people of Sindh and visit victims of target killings in Karachi. I am still waiting for Imran Khan to pursue cases against Altaf Hussain in London that he claimed he would. His action on the ground is now in contradiction to his claims with seemingly cordial relations with the MQM. I am still waiting for Imran Khan to go to the superior courts to keep the Chaudhries from running for elections, which he was determined to pursue prior to the 2008 elections and even showed their bank default papers in front of the media. I am still waiting for Imran Khan to conduct a rally in Karachi, Quaid-e Azam’s home city, and refer to Altaf Hussain by a self-generated name like he did for the PML-N leaders by calling them the ‘dengue brothers’. I am still waiting for Imran Khan to bring new leadership ahead rather than giving the second seat on stage in his Lahore rally to a controversial figure like Mian Azhar, who has only recently joined the PTI.
