Is Pakistan descending into dystopia?

An expatriate friend after one of his frequent visits, described living in Pakistan as living in an Orwellian funhouse on its way to becoming a dystopian society. Dystopian societies feature different kinds of repressive social control systems and practice various forms of active and passive coercion. They are also often imagined as police states with unlimited power over their citizens, using terror and propaganda as part of ‘supervision’ and the ‘seduction’ techniques to retain absolute control. It is a bit like the fictional state described in Suzanne Collins’ best-selling trilogy, The Hunger Games, which is set in a nation, Panem, in which everything is televised. A fragmented post-apocalyptic society is ruled by the fascistic Capitol, keeping the masses quiet by feeding them reality war games featuring teenagers who must fight to the last one standing. Certainly not a description that applies to Pakistan, which on the surface is a functioning democracy, with an increasingly independent superior judiciary and a generally free thriving media, which one commonly associates with a free society, and certainly not a Taliban Afghanistan in the making. While we might perhaps agree that there is no imminent danger of Pakistan turning into an ‘outpost of tyranny’ (our Baloch brothers will certainly disagree), it may be worth examining any dystopian trends that could upset the status quo.
As has been reported, Pakistan is considered among the most unsafe places for journalists to work in with 11 journalists killed last year, including the unsolved murder of Saleem Shahzad. It is true that under the guise of ‘national security’, the state historically has played hardball with individuals and groups who appear to threaten the entrenched interests of the armed forces and the powerful civilian elite. This phenomenon has not been restricted to attacks on journalists but also applied to political dissenters; notable cases include the brutal torture and murder of communist leader Hasan Nasir in the Lahore Fort in 1960, and the disappearance of activist Johnny Dass during the Baloch uprising in the 1970s. To many Pakistanis, the officially sanctioned mass murder and rape that accompanied the creation of Bangladesh is an unpleasant memory best forgotten. This trend has continued in the present day with the many cases of torture and thousands of ‘disappeared’ in the ongoing ‘war on terror’ and the current Balochistan insurgency. The point is that an authoritarian apparatus, intolerant of any criticism and practising state-sponsored violence against dissidents while the general population looks on in silent acquiescence, can still drag a country into a dystopian era.
The other concern is that the ideological blowback from the decade’s long state policies aimed at coddling extremist Islam has made the general populace more receptive to restrictions on freedom of religion and expression, which has fostered sectarianism and is causing suffering to many citizens from the minorities. This warped mindset has probably led to the recent torture and burning of a ‘mentally unstable’ man for alleged blasphemy by a frenzied mob in southern Punjab. Another consequence of this repressive thinking is that many Pakistani women are forced to remain within the four walls of their houses as ‘prisoners’, which in itself is a crime against humanity. There is also growing evidence that a minority has become enamoured with the establishment of a totalitarian theocracy that seeks to replace a ‘secular’ and ‘godless’ government tainted with corruption and accused of selling out to foreign powers. Certainly, there are pockets in the country like Swat before it was cleared, and FATA, where terror and propaganda play a role in maintaining a ‘parallel’ government, which in effect co-opts state power as people lose confidence in democracy. This anti-state trend may have dangerous consequences if it spreads to other parts of the country. The use of Islam by the state as a convenient substitute for nation-state building, and the failure of domestic economic and social policies have done much to alienate the population and push them towards religion, which has historically found fertile ground where oppressive circumstances are present. To reverse this trend, the mainstream political parties have to start delivering on their development promises and improving living conditions, and their candidates have to improve upon their performance and image of consistent incompetence, nepotism, and corruption.
The best protection against emerging totalitarianism is a working pluralistic democratic system and the practice of a tolerant Islam. The great Spanish writer, Blasco Ibáñez in Dans l’Ombre de La Cathédrale described Muslim rule in Spain as a ‘civilisational expedition’ coming from the south rather than a conquest. To Ibáñez, it was not an invasion imposing itself by arms, but a new society whose vigorous roots were sprouting from everywhere. Describing the conquering Muslims, he says, “The principle of freedom of conscience, cornerstone of the greatness of nations, was dear to them. In the cities they ruled, they accepted the church of the Christian and the synagogue of the Jew.” While this writer has always been troubled by a description of any conquest or conquerors as ‘civilisational’ (just ask the conquered!), a return to a tolerant Islam described by Ibáñez would certainly be welcome.

Islam was tolerant only when it did not have the power to persecute non-muslims or needed non-muslim expertise for its own glorification or survival.
Look at Mohammad in Makkah till 622 AD where he was not powerful and after 622 AD when he got hold of Madinah and achieved total totalitarian power over the city. Then he came back with much power to Makkah (630 AD) and let loose a reign of islamofascist terror and manipulation in Makkah and beyond.
That story repeats itself wherever islam came. Islam came through deceit (islamic missionaries and sufis) followed by violence (muslim armies) or violence (muslim armies) followed by deceit (sufis and islamic missionaries).
That is the real history of islam – but muslim children are not taught that truth. Islam will win through violence and deceit. Whole of mankind is now endangered due to islam. Islam is not in danger – islam is the danger (to all decent honest rational human beings).

Whatever the reasons, at least in the words of a notable Spaniard Islam in Spain exhibited tolerance. That can’t be a bad thing compared to Pakistan of today where intolerance thrives!

As you know Pakistan is in a ”state of war”. You cannot expect all things to be going right in such a place. The US and its allies are patronizing their choicest kinda ”democracy’ ( the New World order) in all so called democratic countries of the world! The US is after world resources and all its allies are towing its line for a breadcrumb that falls from Uncle Sam’s mouth. It is for this reason that the US and its allies have a different policy towards Pakistan and some other weaker countries in contrast to Saudi Arabia. Why?? Isn’t that sheer hypocrisy??

why all of you waste your times criticizing islam if you want to know real islam then read quran and sayings of Muhammad saw. Only just tell me why islam is fastest growing religion in last 100 years if that bad is islam? why after 9/11 34000 americans accept islam more of which were women. if that bad is islam it means that 34000 people were abnormal and more women .what do you say. plz talk on facts. in last 10 years 1.5 millions europeans turned to religion of peace and they were strongly against the islam. Hinduism does not claim to be ‘better’ than Islam or Any other religion. Islam’s “logic” is: “islam claims it is correct, perfect and final therefore it is correct, perfect and final.” Few human beings and no muslims have the training to reject this manipulation.
Analytic thinking on islam and its actual results leaves us no oter conclusion that islam is a very deceitful, tricky and intimidating ideology. The reactions which some muslims show to any criticism of islam is one powerful hint of islam’s fascism.

Indians are Hobbesian.
Corruption in India is a cultural aspect.
Indians seem to think nothing peculiar about corruption… It is everywhere.
Indians tolerate corrupt individuals rather than correct them.
No race can be congenitally corrupt.
But can a race be corrupted by its culture?
To know why Indians are corrupt, look at their patterns and practices.
First:
Religion is transactional in India.
Indians give God cash and anticipate an out-of-turn reward. Such a plea acknowledges that favours are needed for the undeserving.In the world outside the temple walls, such a transaction is named – ‘ Dakshina’ (bribe).
A wealthy Indian gives not cash to temples, but gold crowns and such baubles. His gifts can not feed the poor. His pay-off is for God. He thinks it will be wasted if it goes to a needy man.
In June 2009, The Hindu published a report of Karnataka minister G. Janardhan Reddy gifting a crown of gold and diamonds worth Rs 45 crore to Tirupati.
India’s temples collect so much that they don’t know what to do with it. Billions are gathering dust in temple vaults.
When Europeans came to India they built schools. When Indians go to Europe & USA, they build temples.
Indians believe that if God accepts money for his favours, then nothing is wrong in doing the same thing… This is why Indians are so easily corruptible… Indian culture accommodates such transactions morally… There is no real stigma.
Second:
Indian moral ambiguity towards corruption is visible in its history.
Indian history tells of the capture of cities and kingdoms after guards were paid off to open the gates, and commanders paid off to surrender. This is unique to India.
Indians’ corrupt nature has meant limited warfare on the subcontinent.
It is striking how little Indians have actually fought compared to ancient Greece and modern Europe.
The Turks’ battles with Nadir Shah were vicious and fought to the finish.
In India fighting wasn’t needed, bribing was enough to see off armies.
Any invader willing to spend cash could brush aside India’s kings, no matter how many tens of thousands soldiers were in their infantry.
Little resistance was given by the Indians at the “Battle” of Plassey. Clive paid off Mir Jaffar and all of Bengal folded to an army of 3,000.
There was always a financial exchange to taking Indian forts. Golconda was captured in 1687 after the secret back door was left open.
Mughals vanquished Marathas and Rajputs with nothing but bribes.
The Raja of Srinagar gave up Dara Shikoh’s son Sulaiman to Aurangzeb after receiving a bribe.
There are many cases where Indians participated on a large scale in treason due to bribery.
Question is: Why Indians have a transactional culture while other ‘civilized’ nations don’t?
Third:
Indians do not believe in the theory that they all can rise if each of them behaves morally, because that is not the message of their faith.
Their caste system separates them. They don’t believe that all men are equal. This resulted in their division and migration to other religions.
Many Hindus started their own faith like Sikh, Jain, Buddha and many converted to Christianity and Islam… The result is that Indians don’t trust one another.
There are no Indians in India; there are Hindus ,Christians, Muslims and what not.

In India every one is thus against everyone else, except God and even He must be bribed.
@tajender Being an Indian you have full right to criticise what you feel are wrongs of Hindu society. I think Tulsidasji has written “Nindan nede rakhiye jo truti deo bataye” meaning keep people who critcse near you because they are telling you your mistakes. Apart from Indians others also have that right and I hope we will learn. Some may agree to some of what you write some may not but in the end more than talk actions will talk much more than words.

There is corruption in India and everyone talks about it. Even some action is being taken against it.
There is much more corruption, bribery, cowardice and opportunism in islam (since 1400 years) and no one dares to talk about it. That is the proof of fascism. If someone points out to this in islam then he is silenced or the muslims point finger at others and try to delude themselves. That is typical muslim self-deceit as the basis and protection of this fascism.

It has been said that ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is a logical continuation of Orwell’s novel ’1984′ both set in different authoritarian (dystopian) era’s, first Nazism and later Communism. I used the Suzanne Collins ‘Hunger Games’description of a dystopic society as that is probably more reflective of the present (media manipulation, power, fame, entertainment and values).

Sufism is, in certain aspects, the non-violent spiritual victory of hindu religions over islam. That is why genuine muslims (e.g. wahhabis, deobandis etc.) are slandering sufism and eliminating sufism from islam. However sufis themselves were also deceivers and self-deceivers and they opportunistically pushed islam, although sufism is not compatible with islam. All these lies and contradictions are now coming to a fight and banging against one another. Islamic expansionism came as lies (=sufis) followed by violence (=muslim military), or violence followed by lies. All these factors are now destroying us (both muslims and non-muslims). There have been many cases of sufis inviting muslim armies and marauders and spreading hate against non-muslims.
MUSLIMS : UNITE OR PERISH. Jamaluddin Afghani was a romantic, and had an idealist vision. BUT man is selfish. But Jamaluddin was not entirely wrong too (if you look at it – from the larger perspective – ‘the civilisational /historical sweep’ to quote Sunil Khilnani !). But damn., Muslims are so divided. There is no Islam that resides in LIVING hearts. I guess all true muslims lie buried underneath the earth. Where is the concept of Equality ? Pakistan (under Musharraf) obliged.. because.. the ETERNAL ENEMY India had to be kept at bay.. otherwise India would readily give its bases (FM Jaswant SIngh had offered Indian bases to the US)… that would compromise Pak (they would bomb Kahuta on the way.. and call it an “accident”).. so Pakistan agreed.. Its not just pakistan.
Iran-Pakistan-Afghanistan ideally must be 1 country… but language – and shia-sunni divide is the wrecker. In other words, it means language and sunni-shia are more imp than Islam itself (to muslims). That IS painful.
Egypt and SUdan were once one country. Britain divided it into 2.. now Sudan re-divided again into 2. What stops KSA, Yemen, Oman and Bahrain to be ONE jazirah-al-arabiyya ? Nothing.. but GREED. ISLAM IS SHARING. And SHARING is the most difficult thing.
