“Innocence of Muslims” and Muslims….

The above is a Facebook status of a friend (may be an excerpt from an article) which accurately describes what right now we are witnessing all across the Muslim world. How an obscure and crude movie on YouTube ( which by no stretch of imagination is state sanctioned or censored in the conventional sense) can spark such violent protests is something which really needs to be pondered upon.
Frankly I will not defend the movie as I have seen the thirteen minute trailer. I fully agree that it is crude and frankly aims at humiliating Muslims. But in no way, does it lead to any justification of the violence which has erupted all across the Muslim world.
Whenever I want to refute the increasingly voiced and accepted opinion that “ Moderate Islam is a Mirage”, something like this happens which leaves me completely speechless.
It is not the protests, as it is natural to protest against what a community feels is offensive and inflammatory. It is the ugly nature of protests which is extremely worrisome. Muslims really need to ponder over the fact that their excessive reaction actually ends up leaving them virtually isolated. The world does not feel any sympathy for them and correctly interprets them as perpetuators of hate and bigotry. This behavior also has a spillover effect on virtually all issues which involves Muslims and creates a universal impression that perhaps everywhere, even where they are actually prosecuted, Muslims are the main culprits.
And by the way let us not forget that while Muslims continue to rage over Blasphemous cartoons, movies and images, their own record with respect to treatment of minorities is pathetic. What they need to learn that world will only sympathize with them if they themselves show the same kind of respect they expect of their faith.
And besides the ugly nature of protests, the Muslims also have this misplaced anger towards the Western governments. An obscure movie, made by someone who has even been convicted in a fraud, is in no way connected with US government or West in general. However, in this strange Muslim mindset ( which by the way is roughly similar all across the globe reaffirming that Islamic identity cuts across the world), everything is being deliberately planned to insult them.
Much deeper and frankly important issue is the confrontation between Western ideals of freedom of speech and Muslims’ extraordinary reverence of their religion. I have pointed out before also that one of the major reasons as to why Muslims are like that is the extraordinary reverence which is instilled in their minds right from the childhood. Even those who are moderate ( and they exist in majority) and for that matter those who don’t follow Islamic rituals, have a tendency to get riled up when anyone mocks Prophet Muhammad or Quran. Religion for Muslims is like race or ethnicity and in fact even more than that. This is something which the West needs to understand.
While it is perfectly right to be critical of radical Islam and also question inhuman laws, but mocking or insulting the Holy Prophet will be completely counterproductive. It is just like calling African Americans as “Niggers” and expecting them not to even notice! Yes I am fully admitting there is a huge issue with the way Islamic World is today and we need to address the issue but mocking won’t just do it. I am being extremely realistic and pragmatic here. It is how you deal with the problem that will make any difference.
Yes I agree that religion is not that sensitive matter for many in the modern world but in Muslim world it is. And through mocking and ridiculing, we only further alienate the Muslims and in the process lose any realistic chance of engaging them for reforms.
However, at the same time it becomes difficult to just bow down in front of violent pressure exerted by Muslims when Muslims themselves show little credibility in terms of how they treat minorities and respect their religious freedom. Moreover, since freedom of expression is often construed as a hard won right therefore making exceptions for Muslims and that too in the face of violence, does not appear to be the “right” choice.
We need to nevertheless agree on something with religion’s criticism in the media. For example just like race, religion’s criticism also needs to be pondered over. For example, perhaps we can broadly agree that criticism on religious laws and customs is acceptable while ridiculing its symbols is not. There has to be at least some consensus, of informal type, which should guide media in general.

Raza, You discussed religious sensitivity but politics is more important here. Muslims would not come out on the streets if these protests were not mobilized and organized to serve political interest. Rape, sodomy and murder did not occur in defense of religion. It is a movement. Al Qaeda and maulvis repel democratic freedom on behalf of the ruling muslim elite. “..extraordinary reverence which is instilled in their minds right from the childhood” includes hate for others. Forceful subjugation is disguised as religion. They are on a mission to kill the democratic inspiration generated by the Arab spring. Revolution cannot be reversed if we stand ground. I don’t think RHR has said any where that these are not political. I think only those things can be manipulated politically which have the “meat”. People normally protest through the organizational appratus of political parties. Political parties or elites can not create sentiments but in reality can whip them or exploit them. Religious sensitivity of irrational type is present and therefore when a stimulus such as the movie or cartoons takes place, political elites can manipulate them to their advantage.

One of the things I have been curious about for many years now is – how does Islam take a normal human being/child and raise him/her to the level of a Muslim, so Islam becomes to him or her, as you said, a race and much more.
Many years ago when I was speculating precisely along those lines a very intelligent lady (cliftonbridge) asked – does a human being develop some new genes when he or she reads the kalima?
We didn’t pursue that further, but she was on to something – Islam does shift the human population as a whole in some interesting ways, although taken individually we may be able to see no significant difference between people.
What changes in the mind of people and outside of it?
I wish there was a way to raise 1000 children to be Muslims and see how they behave among themselves and with others over a period of twenty years, and then raise them again as non-Muslims, and see matters change…..
Tragically, such experiments are not possible..so we are left to speculate.
One thing I am sure about – at some point, in the development of a Muslim child, there occurs a complete fusion of identity of self with the identity of Islam (in a way that happens only partly for children growing up in most other religious traditions – not sure orthodox judaism etc work).
Consider, for instance, for a Hindu, the statement that ‘Hinduism should not be insulted’ sounds absurd – it has no meaning. Hinduism is a bunch of ideas and traditions. It’s not someone who can be ‘insulted’ and whose ‘reputation’ is to be protected in some moral way.
But in Islam, somehow, a child, it seems to me, comes to assign his or her own identity to Islam, in a mythisized, idealized sort of way, and consciously creates a personal connection, as he or she might with a father or mother, who because they are not real, can never be abandoned.
So how is the identity of a Muslim child’s self fused with the identity of Islam? Might be worth investigating…

RHR, it will be hard to mandate that religious symbols etc not be insulted. How do you outlaw long-standing sayings like – Holy cows make the best burgers?
I don’t think we can. Iconoclasm – breaking other peoples icons has long been a revered and greatly valued activity. The only option that can satisfy both Muslim and non-Muslim world is to conceptualize Islam separately from the rest.
Can that be done without creating even more problems? I don’t know…The first step would have to be for some Muslims who interact most closely with non-Muslims to separate their own identity from that of Islam.
About politics, here is what we overlook.
Once you create such a powerful ‘tool’ as Islam is in the minds of its adherents, it would be absurd to expect that it will not be used by everyone who possibly can use it for their own political purposes.
This is the reason why Islam and politics cannot be separated: – it is too potent a political tool. So in this dog-eat-dog world, if one individual Muslim/group of Muslims doesn’t use it for his/its political purposes, someone else or some other group surely will stand up to use it to their’s.
So what can be done to separate Islam from politics? Reduce its power.

A fascist ideology “wins” by enforcing an identity between the fuehrer and “his” people, between glorification of the ideology and the well-being of the person, between answers (which this ideology supposedly gives to ALL questions) and the “self-esteem” of its quislings. Islam as a fascist ideology is no different. And it is already 1400 years in their “genes”.
The kuran and hadith contain a lot of hate, slander and insults against non-muslims. Even a lot of violence against non-muslims results from them. Islam is an ideology for the rowdies who say: “I have the right to insult others but the others must respect me.”

I am hardly a conventional Muslim and yet even I felt insulted by the movie..The only difference is that over the years I have become extremely skeptical and have tried to reduce my “instinctive” liking for my religion…And today what you see is a result of deliberate conscious effort….particularly of thinking gainst the instincts..
Islam as an ideology and more so the way it is dominant in our childhood creates an identity based on it. That identity is not the only identity of course as human beings have multiple identities…but that identity is a very strong one and comes out with full ferocity when Islamic religious symbols are attacked..
It is unfortunate but true..
many of my friends hardly follow any ritual..they drink, have sex outside marriage, have interest bearing bank accounts and yet…..when the persona of the Holy Prophet Muhammad is attacked they all get riled up..
That is why I say it is like your skin color…..
It is not only the “belief” but there is somethig else also…
You know even Irshad Manji wrote that when people askd her to simply leave Islam, she said that she was “born” as one and therefore it is the part of her identity..
Even those who have left Islam are still connected to it even if only critically..
I am still searching myself…..a non religious muslim…it may seem like an oxymoron or an inherent paradox but actually it is not..

If it is ‘brainwashing’ how and why did the ‘brainwashing’ of communism failed, and that of Islam doesn’t? What makes it different from the traditoinal ‘fascism’ of Mussolini, for instance, if we conceptualize it as fasscism?

The process of conversion to Islam, I think, is the most fascinating one. A person may take many routes into Islam. One is of ‘love’ for Islamic figures. Other of accepting that Allah is the only true God etc. Third of seeing ‘brothrhood’ or ‘discipline’ or ‘justice’ in Islam. And may be some more.
In each case, I think, a conversion of IDENTITY comes much before and takes precedence over any knowledge or real acceptance of the Islamic precepts itself.
If you recall, this is precisely what happened in the Indian subcontinent (and all around it). People became ‘Muslims’ without having the faintest clue what the Quran actually contained.
Once the identity was converted, THEN the religion was learnt with reverence and accepted, rarely before.
Nothing wrong with that at all. Probably all proselytization game is played like that – except that in the case of islam this identity conversion takes a peculiar shape.

And who says the brainwashing of Islam hasn’t ever failed? Although they constitute a very small minority, there are people who’ve succeeded in quitting Islam and lived to tell the tale. And has it occurred to you that those who willingly continue to ‘maintain their faith’ in Islam may be doing so for reasons OTHER than the absence of the possibility of ‘enlightenment’ ?

I fully grant you that. But that has been the case since the day Islam was born. It makes no difference in the aggregate.
And that, to me, is the most interesting thing. No matter how ‘individausl’ change, the totality, the group is able to march on. The right phrase, by the way, is: the caravan of Islam marches on.
Essentially those who ‘change’ are neutered internally. They end up, if they remain active at all, focused outside – ‘reinterpreting’ islam for non-Muslims, rarely for Muslims themselves.
PEACE OF THE STRONG : If you are strong you (and your icons) will be respected. If you are weak… Weakness invites aggression. There are only 2 options left to respond to : Cartoons / Novels / Songs / Icon’s pictures on underwear/shoe-soles / Youtube Videoclips / Porn movies (thats yet to come) etc.
Option 1) Go for grass roots solid work and start re-building the core. Over a period (say a few decades) you will stabilise… and such acts of vandalism will play out (law of diminishing returns) and die a natural death.
Option 2) Ignore these daily insults and move on. If you love your religion/ faith / icons, what and how does it matter if others hate them ? You have a right to love – they have a right to hate ! Though it is a pity that they hate without REASON. That is the sad part – but so be it. If muslims world-wide give a cold shoulder and ignore these daily attack… i am sure, with time they would die a natural death too.
The Quick Response : As Muslims believe in giving quick response to such attempts.. it has become the easiest way for anyone to become a Millionaire overnight. Abuse the Prophet, and turn into a Celebrity overnight.
Let them make a Porn movie on a daily basis – and release them. Let them write novels – songs – draw cartoons – on a daily basis – and publish them. Musilms ignore them.. Let others watch/read/ and enjoy. Indeed they have a right to choose whom to hate… This will harden/strengthen the IMAAN of Muslims.. and it is a blessing (in disguise).

But I know that an over whelming majority has extremely different views and I hardly make any conection with them particularly on matters of Isam..I keep on hearing that I am not “understanding” with respect to Muslims or that I try to please Hindus or Indians because they generally like what I write!!!!
I remember someone told me that what I write actually makes all “enemies” and haters of Islam feel secure in their hatred.
RHR asking the West to “understand” the muslim mind should be demeaning to all self-respecting muslims. Like begging a more evolved life-form to comprehend why the less evolved ones behave like dopes. Like schooling regular folks on why a pit-bull must not be riled up. The implication of course is that the pit-bull is a dope.
It’s absurd that a crappy movie or draw a crappy cartoon causes millions of folks to leave their sanity at home. I cannot decide whether these folks are really pissed off with the movie/cartoon or are just frustrated with their own governments but cannot show it – so instead vent at the US which cannot retaliate. I often do put forward the Islamic pov, as accurately as possible, in the comments section of Express Tribune. The view point is a little stylized, deliberately, but not such as will not ring true with the populace in the Islamic world and in the heart of a believer.
So long as you believe in Islam, I am most open to correcting any errors that might have crept into any of my comments on Express Tribune, given that those comments are all written to highlight some specific Islamic pov.
Fascism can come in many “fascinating” forms. In fact it does assume fascinating forms to attract the gullible and the weak. Islam is no different in this. But once a person is born into it or converts to it then he cannot leave and then he is just a victim or an agent or instrument of this fascism.
The west asiatic god-concept, esp. the arabic-mohammadan one, is totalitarian-fascistic and threatens those who criticize it.

A muslim is not raised by Islam but is born as a muslim. Remember, a soul is born before the birth. These are no longer protests but a revolution which started during the arab spring and is now manifesting itself into a movement, an avalanche, the direct inervention of Godly forces and anyone who opposes it or stands in the way be washed away like a tree leave. It is the result of the failed foreign policy of Hillary Clinton, she mobilised all ambassadirial staff and the CIA operatives to obtain first hand infomation of the political leadership of the world including those who are in power or in the opposition, so as to intervene whenever there is a leadership coming which is not favourable to USA. This has miserably failed in Libya. The infamous video triggered up what should have occured long time ago when under the guise of freedom of expression, the riff raffs came out of their rat holes and managed to obtain cheap publicity at the expense of muslim communities around the globe.
