Jinnah and the Rohingyas

By Yasser Latif Hamdani

A number of ill-informed articles have appeared in the national press recently which have taken a rather strange line:   Jinnah is responsible for the plight of Rohingyas in Burma. Jinnah – who died in 1948- is supposed to be responsible for the plight of Burmese Muslims in 2015 because in 1948 the Muslims of Arakan i.e. Burma appealed to him to help them secede (the Mayu region) from Burma and join East Pakistan.  Jinnah refused stating that such an event would be tantamount to interference in Burmese affairs. He further advised the Burmese Muslims to work for their rights as citizens of Burma.  Rohingyas as such constituted a very small percentage of the Burmese population and the idea that they could claim territory on that basis was preposterous. Ultimately a number of Rohingyas did move to the then East Pakistan – now Bangladesh.  Jinnah had given a personal assurance to General Aung San (father of Aung San Suu Kyi) that he was not a supporter of the secessionist plan. (See Pages 96-97 of the book “Muslims of Burma” by Moshe Yegar) Should Jinnah or subsequent rulers have gone to war to annex part of Burma where in any event there were no contiguous Muslim regions?  Such a move would unjustified morally, ethically, legally and practically.

The contradictions of Jinnah’s critics are remarkable. On the one hand they accuse Jinnah of “annexing” Kalat (even though no princely state in the subcontinent was allowed to go independent), though it must be said to their “credit” that they have never raised a voice against the genocide of Hyderabadi Muslims in 1948 by the Dominion of India during Operation Polo.  Nevertheless they would have wanted Jinnah to invade Burma and take over a part of its territory through war. And because Jinnah refused to go to war with Burma to annex parts of it to East Pakistan, “he is responsible for the plight of Rohingya today”. The best case that Rohingyas have today is that they were, they are and they will be the natives of Burma – and that was the advice the Quaid-e-Azam gave them.  Pakistan in any event has no moral claim to speak for Rohingyas given the absolute hash of things we have made vis a vis our own religious minorities.  The case of Rohingyas does not lie in saying that they are Bengalis or Pakistanis or what have you. The case of Rohingyas is that they are citizens of Burma- a right denied to them by the Citizenship Act of 1982. This rhetoric therefore by certain sections is counterproductive because it shows that Arakan Muslims never wanted to be part of Burma. Citizenship is very different from nationalism.  Nations can straddle states and boundaries.  Citizenship however is the social compact between the state and the individual.  Muslims of Burma want to be citizens of Burma (as they were advised by Jinnah in 1948).  90 million Muslims with 60 million living in contiguous units of a subcontinent under multiple tiers of sovereignty asking for a homeland is very different from a small minority of less than a million staking claim to separatism.

    a forgotten page of history,

    REAL FACTS & HISTORY
It was Emperor Aurangzeb who first asked the East India Company to quit India in 1686 Surat!
The first war against the British was fought almost 200 years before independence The Battle of Plassey, wherein Nawab Sirajuddawla of Bengal was treacherously defeated by the British in 1757!
The first signs of victory against the British were seen in Mysore where Nawab Hyder Ali first waged war against the British in 1782. He was succeeded by his son, Tipu Sultan who again fought them in 1791 and was eventually treacherously defeated and martyred in 1799. Tipu Sultan was the first General to use missiles in warfare!
The Mujahid Movement was active during 1824 and 1831 under the leadership of Syed Ahmad Shaheed and his two disciples and they were successful in liberating the North-west province from British authority. Syed Ahmad Shaheed was nominated Khalifa, but the freedom was short lived and he was martyred in 1831!
The last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar was to lead the War of Independence in 1857. A country-wide war was to begin simultaneously on the 31st of May 1857, but the Indians among the British army revolted before that on the 10th of May 1857!
A startling 5,00,000 Muslims were martyred following the events of 1857, of which 5000 were Ulema (religious scholars). It is said that there was not a single tree on the Grand Trunk Road from Delhi to Calcutta but that an alims body was not found hanging on it for days together!
Indian Ulema called for Jihad against the British and declared India as Darul Harb (Territory under Enemy control). This call found resonance all over the country with Muslims rising up against the British!
To liberate the countrymen from the Cultural and Educational bondages of the colonial empire, towering centres of learning like the Darul Uloom Deoband, Darul Uloom Nadwa and the Aligarh Muslim University were established in the late 19th Century, which are still counted amongst the leading Indian seminaries!
The Reshmi Rumaal Tehreeq was launched in 1905 by Shaikhul Islam Maulana Mehmood Hasan and Maulana Ubaidullah Sindhi to unite all the Indian states against the British. Maulana Mehmood was imprisoned in Malta and Kalapani for the same where he breathed his last!
The Indian National Congress, from the time of its inception to independence has seen 9 Presidents who were Muslims!
Barrister M. K. Gandhi served in a law firm in South Africa owned by a Muslim, who on his own expenses brought Gandhiji to India in 1916. Here, he started his agitation under the Ali Biradran (Ali Brothers)!
The Mopla movement saw 3000 Muslims being martyred in a single battle!
The Non-cooperation Movement and the Swadeshi Movement saw overwhelming Muslim participation. Janab Sabusiddiq who was the Sugar-king of that time gave up his business as a form of boycott. The Khoja and Memon communities owned the biggest business houses of that time and they parted with their treasured industries to support the boycott!
The 1942 Quit India movement was actually planned by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was imprisoned on the 8th of August and sent to Ahmadnagar, because of which Gandhiji had to lead the movement on the 9th of August!
Jyotiba Phule was sponsored by his neighbour, Usman Bagban in his educational activities, so much so that the school in which he taught was owned by Mr. Usman. His daughter, Fatima was the first girl student there and joined as a teacher thereafter!
Muslim leaders always supported the Dalit cause. In the Round Table Conference held in London, Maulana Muhammad Ali Johar was lured into abandoning the Dalit cause in lieu of accepting all the other demands of the Muslims. But Maulana Johar refused to forsake the Dalits!
When Dr. B.R. Ambedkar could not win the 1946 Central Elections, the Bengal Muslim League vacated one of its own seats and offered it to Dr. Ambedkar, who won it in the bypoll. This gesture by the Muslim League paved the way for his entry into the Constituent Assembly and the rest as they say, is history!
Muslims freedom fighters were active in the field of journalism as well. Maulana Azad used his pen against the British despite being prevented by the colonial powers a number of times. In fact, the first journalist to be martyred in the cause of Indias Freedom Struggle was also a Muslim- Maulana Baqar Ali.
So why have these points, and many many such similar ones, been relegated to the dustbin by our Historians? Why are these events of History not taught in our History classes? Why are our childrens text books bereft of these historical facts? Why this prejudice? This is a deliberate attempt to discredit the Muslim leadership and indeed the Muslim masses, in order to spread in the Muslim community a sense of inferiority complex and to push them on a defensive stand. What have you done for this nation to deserve the benefits of its independence? we are asked! The Muslim community has played a pivotal role in Indias Freedom Struggle and it is high time we Indians are made aware of this untold and hidden aspect of History.
India is again being enslaved by our politicians. It is time to liberate her again from domestic and international neo-colonialism.
I request all my brothers pls fwd this msg to every citizen.. and rcreate awareness about sacrifices by muslims in the indian history …….

    Yoga in my family
    M J Akbar

Has Congress under Rahul Gandhi got Anglicized in the 19th century sense, where ‘native’ knowledge is considered regression?

    .

Girls practise yoga inside their school ahead of International Day of Yoga, in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Reuters
My father-in-law, Joseph John, son of a high priest in the Syrian Christian church, was a gentle person with a smile that mirrored a warm heart. He had but two passions. One was environment. He started Friends of Trees in Mumbai, where he spent his professional life, at a time when destroying trees was a casual habit of both builders and the municipality. His significant contribution to the nation’s ecology was saving Kerala’s Silent Valley from encroachment and destruction, a service he continued to serve during retirement at his ancestral village in Kottayam. If those forests are still pristine it is at least partly due to Joseph John.

    .

His second passion was yoga. Every morning, without fail, he did the surya namaskar, and remained in exemplary health even after time had turned his physique frail. Yoga was still something of a cult reality then, associated with mystics and yogis, and hardly the international phenomenon that it has now become. But it would never have occurred to Babu, our affectionate term for my father-in-law, that yoga somehow interfered with his belief in Christianity. My wife continues to do yoga, and it has stood her in excellent stead. A few weeks ago I went to visit my young niece, who like me is a Muslim, and discovered that she was on her way to becoming a yoga instructor. No one sees any conflict between an ancient Indian wisdom and personal commitment to a preferred faith. They do not recite a particular verse if they do not want to. They recognise yoga as a marvellous passport to health and serenity.

    .
The Congress decision to boycott a global celebration of India’s genius on Yoga Day is, therefore, puzzling at the very least. Is it a touch of bile in the brain? Or is the problem elsewhere? Has Congress under Rahul Gandhi got Anglicized in the 19th century sense, where “native” knowledge is considered regression? Or is Congress, once again, merely pandering to extremists among minorities who get more support from media vehicles eager for provocative sound-bites than they get from their community? I hope one is not mixing metaphors when one notes that Congress leaders are getting into all kinds of contortions in their effort to explain the inexplicable and defend the indefensible.

    .

Communists share this sneering attitude towards Yoga Day, but then they would deride anything that Karl Marx forgot to mention. An Indian Mao Zedong, however, might have understood the need to correlate Marxist thought with Indian culture.

    .

Political parties, in any case, should have the sense to keep a sharp eye on public opinion. Indians, across the board, have supported Yoga Day with enthusiasm. Mamata Banerjee, who gets a larger share of the Muslim vote in Bengal than Congress has got in five decades, is joining the celebration. Mayawati, who needs Muslim votes in UP in order to get seats, has welcomed the event, albeit with an acerbic comment about BJP in the codicil. Kerala’s Congress Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is a clever politician who wants to satisfy public opinion and appease his leader Rahul Gandhi; his state is on board, but he has taken the day off. Even the vituperative Azam Khan, in Mulayam Singh Yadav’s party, has moderated his stance. Learned scholars from Deoband have found nothing wrong with yoga, as long as Muslims do not repeat “Om”. Fair enough. There should never be compulsion.

    .

The issue is not religion but syncretism, an indelible part of India’s composite culture. We all gain by offering that which can be shared; together we create an Indian bouquet of flowers from different gardens of the same land. This creative harmony blossoms in philosophy, poetry, art, attitudes, fashion, food. There is nothing new about this. Muslim rulers of the Delhi Sultanate bathed in water from the Ganges, which was transported by ox-cart: this did not make them irreligious or non-Muslims. Hindus bow at the shrines of Sufi saints like Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti at Ajmer: this does not make them non-Hindus. Every male Prime Minister from Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi, with the exception of Narasimha Rao and Deve Gowda, has worn churidar pyjamas: where did the churidar come from? Equally, we do not consider Rao or Gowda to be any less Indian because they preferred a dhoti, worn in different styles. The evolution of India is a creative marvel rooted in the hearts of the people.

    .

Indians reject one thing, and have done so through the thousands of years of our recorded civilisation: the closed mind. There have been phases during which the closed mind has prevailed, particularly in our social behaviour, but the correction has always been internal, through reform led by savants whose head was high and mind was free.

    .

India found space for every faith, and every faith found space for India. Let us offer a namashkar and a salaam to this unique harmony.

    3.jpg

    Smokers’ Corner: The map man
    NADEEM F. PARACHA

Standard text books in Pakistani schools all describe Chaudhry Rehmat Ali as the man who coined the word Pakistan. He is also defined as being one of the main architects of the idea of a separate Muslim homeland in South Asia — an idea that was echoed some years later by poet and philosopher, Mohammad Iqbal, and eventually shaped into reality by Mohammad Ali Jinnah in August 1947.

Not much else is mentioned in these text books about Rehmat Ali. He is presented as a one-shot wonder, someone who came up with the name and idea of Pakistan but then just simply vanishes from the pages after 1940!

    .

Late last year while going through some piles of books at a second-hand bookstore in Karachi’s Boat Basin area, I came upon a grubby thin publication called Pakistan: The Fatherland of Pak Nation.

    .

This book that I ended up buying (for just Rs100) was a 1956 reprint of a 1934 pamphlet authored by Rehmat Ali. It’s a fascinating read! More so because it can actually help one understand the intellectual (and maybe even psychological) disposition of a vital character in the history of the making of Pakistan, but someone who never managed to get more than a paragraph or two in most text books.

    .

After reading the book one can also understand why this happened. The book reproduces a 1934 pamphlet that Rehmat Ali wrote when he was a student in England.

    .

In it he outlines a theory that suggests that Muslims of the region should be working towards carving out their own sovereign homeland not only because a Hindu-majority India was detrimental to the political, cultural and economic interests of the Muslims, but also because such a homeland already existed across various periods of history.

    .

After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, many religious parties picked up Rehmat Ali’s idea and began to claim that the seeds of Pakistan’s creation were first sowed by the invading forces of Arab commander, Mohammad Bin Qasim (in the early 8th century), but Rehmat Ali’s imagined history actually went back even further.

    .

To him the separate homeland in the region that he was talking about first emerged in a time period he calls ‘The Dawn of History.’ Though he doesn’t attach any date or year to this, but with the help of a map (titled ‘Pakistan at the Dawn of History’), he explains how the civilisations that first emerged beside the mighty Indus and those that sprang up around the banks of River Ganges were somewhat separate.

    .

But to Rehmat the ‘dawn’ fully appears in the 8th century when the Arab Umayyad Empire extended its reach into Sindh, situated on either sides of the mighty Indus. This he also explains with the help of a map. The Sindh part on the map is labelled as ‘Pakistan.’

    .

Thus follow 13 more maps covering various periods from the eighth to early 20th centuries. The area that Rehmat Ali calls Pakistan expands and shrinks, enlarges and then contracts again across the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal era, and the early British period, and all the way till 1942.

    .

The last of these maps is titled ‘The Pak Millat 1942’. The Pak Millat constitutes all of what is Pakistan and Bangladesh today; and pieces of Muslim-majority areas in central and north India which Ali describe as being ‘Usmanistan’, ‘Farooqistan’, ‘Siddiqistan’ and Haideristan.’

    .

Rehmat Ali’s style of writing is almost frantic, impulsive and that of an alarmist, warning the Muslims of India that a Pakistan or ‘Pak Millat’ that he was purposing is already out there and needed to be reclaimed.

    .

So in a way, instead of actually propagating a new Muslim homeland, Rehmat Ali was really asking the Muslims to reclaim (and declare) geographical areas that had always been their home.

    .

When Rehmat Ali first published his pamphlet (and 13 maps), he was largely ignored by a bulk of Muslim political leaders and intellectuals in India. Some even saw him as being an overexcited youth lost in the mad haze of political fantasies, if not a downright crank!

    .

Alyssa Ayres in her book Language and Nationalism in Pakistan quotes Jinnah, describing the pamphlet as ‘ravings of a student …’

    .

One should be reminded that till Iqbal decided to (albeit tentatively) use Rehmat Ali’s word ‘Pakistan’ in 1940, Jinnah was still very much interested in maintaining a united India.

    .

In fact, according to author and scholar Ayesha Jalal, Jinnah was still trying to work towards reaching a workable post-colonial relationship between the Muslims and the Hindus of region till the early 1940s!

    .

Though the word that Rehmat Ali had coined (‘Pakistan’) eventually managed to stir the imagination of millions of Muslims and their leaders, its inventor was soon at loggerheads with most of these leaders.

    .

According to famous historian, K.K. Aziz, Jinnah saw the name as a throwaway anomaly, and an impulsive invention of certain students (i.e. Rehmat Ali).

    .

In a 1943 speech, Jinnah told a crowd in Delhi that before 1940 the word Pakistan had been used more by the Hindu and British press than by the Muslims; and that it was actually imposed upon the Muslims of India by these two communities.

    .

However, in the same speech, Jinnah announced that he will embrace the word because now it had become synonymous with Muslim struggle in India.

    .

Rehmat Ali had actually met Jinnah in 1934, only days after he had authored his pamphlet. According to K.K. Aziz, Jinnah, after noticing the restless and impulsive nature of the young ideologue, told him ‘My dear boy, don’t be in a hurry; let the waters flow and they will find their own level …’

    .

Jinnah’s level-headed and unruffled disposition ran against Rehmat Ali’s impulsive and volatile personality. He remained in England during most of what became known as the ‘Pakistan Movement;’ and even after the creation of a Pakistan that he had first theorised in his explosive pamphlet in 1934, Rehmat Ali arrived in the new country almost a year after its formation.

    .

He vehemently criticised Jinnah and his party (the Muslim League) for compromising the ‘full idea of Pakistan’ and getting only a portion of what he had envisioned (in his pamphlet).

    .

Though Jinnah too wasn’t satisfied with what he got (as Pakistan), he (and the League) had decided to make the best of whatever they had managed to win.

    .

Rehmat Ali continued to deliver his scathing criticism. But soon after Jinnah’s unfortunate death in 1948, Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan (a close confidant of Jinnah), lambasted Ali and ordered him to leave the country.

    .

Rehmat returned to England. Three years later he was found dead in his bedroom. He had passed away in his sleep. His body was found a few days after his demise. He was 55.

    .

As Alyssa Ayres puts it in her book, Rehmat ended up becoming nothing more than a footnote in the history of Pakistan — a country that he had theorised had existed since the ‘dawn of history.’

Islamic State lays mines in ancient city of Palmyra
Islamic State has reportedly planted mines and bombs in the ruins of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, according to a monitoring organisation.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was not immediately clear whether the group was preparing to destroy the ancient ruins, or if they were simply attempting to prevent government forces from advancing towards the city in the centre of the war-torn country, also known as Tadmur.

    .
“They have planted it yesterday. They also planted some around the Roman theatre, we still do not know the real reason,” Rami Abdulrahman, the head of the Observatory, told Reuters.
    .
The ultra-hardline Sunni Muslim group in May seized the city of 50,000 people, site of some of the world’s most extensive and best-preserved ancient Roman ruins, which are feared to be at significant risk of destruction.

    Rex asks:
“How does one destroy the ruins?”

Just like islam has first ruined your brain and then is also slowly destroying your ruined brain.

Ruin means more than 50% (but less than 100%) damage,
    destroy means 100% damage.

No wonder rex had to ask such a silly question, but he thought it is such a very intelligent queation.

whatever real or imaginary sacrifices made by muslims in India – they were made for islamic imperialism and fascism – not for the welfare of hindus and non-muslims.

    Furthermore past is past.

Now muslims are revealing their plans to exterminate non-muslims more and more.

Forget the supposedly glorious past – the FUTURE of islam is violent and fascistic, not only for non-muslims but also for muslims.
Don’t say later that you were not warned.
Don’t waste time on these silly self-glorifications of your islam.

    Timely,
A ruin is what has been destroyed! Now say it in your language, leaving english for others. No one knows better than a German who had to dig through the ruins at the end of ww2. Ofcours a ruin can be rebuilt and renovated to its original form hence the UNESCO is constantly identifying famous ruins as the National heritage for their people.
