Paris Attacks: Defend the Secularist Faith

By Ayushman Jamwal

Paris

In the Dark Knight, the Joker poignantly expresses his belief to the caped crusader that human society is always prey to its base, survivalist instincts, where the notion of humanity is nothing more than a punch line. In that legendary interrogation scene he reflects on human society saying, “their morals and code, it’s a bad joke, dropped at the first sign of trouble. They are only as good as the world allows them to be. When the chips are down, these civilized people will eat each other.”

These words ring across my mind when I think of Paris, and the fear and confusion that has gripped citizens across Europe. Similar to the Joker, ISIS’ dastardly act is a challenge to the world’s faith in the
motto of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity – the secularist faith. As homegrown extremists are responsible for these acts of terror, the rise of right-wing political groups across Europe who denounce the ethos of multiculturalism seems to be the endgame of the terror group. Months after Charlie Hebdo, ISIS is using fear to drive the citizenry from all communities in the West to the Right and further apart, to mirror its own twisted vision of ideological purity, where like medieval times your faith is your uniform on the battlefield.

The Paris attacks has also put a political lens over the refugee crisis, where hundreds of people fleeing ISIS in Iraq and Syria have found shelter in Europe. The leaders of Frances’ Front National, Britain’s UK Independence Party, Poland’s Law and Justice and Hungary’s Fidesz party all have said that the refugees pose a significant security risk to Europe, while in the backdrop they espouse how ‘Islamisation’ has placed European values under threat. This is clearly what ISIS wants, to replicate the racial profiling and string of attacks on Muslim groups in the United States post 9/11.

Europe rests on a knife’s edge, and this is the time for the governments to aggressively defend the secularist faith of their constitutions to counter the narrative of the right wing, which is being baited by terror groups. The French government’s decision to re-open schools and universities across Paris, and a national appeal for unity and political cooperation is an open defiance of ISIS and sends the right messages to people across the world. At the same time, the European governments can no longer tiptoe around the menace of homegrown terror. They cannot fear talking about Islamic extremism for
the sake of political correctness. The fallout of that attitude has been that the extreme right is controlling the whole argument, and their narratives are emboldened by ISIS and other terror groups.
De-legitimising the right wing’s control over the terror debate and defending the secularist faith is a tough job, but Europe is the champion of multiculturalism and its liberal leaders are up to the challenge.

This is the time where everyone from a Prime Minister to a local community leader needs to embolden a traumatized citizenry to hold on to the ideals that make them free and fearless. In these times, I remember the famous words of CBS news legend and civil rights crusader Edward Murrow appealing to the human condition when in turmoil, something I feel should resonate across he world – “We will not walk in fear one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember we are not descended from fearful men. Not from men who feared to write, to associate, to speak and to defend.”

There is no secularism per say in Europe but separation of church and the government and both operating independent of each other. The French.govt however pay a great lip service to licite.

Empty words. The left is incapable of dealing with Islamic ‘extremism’ because it is incapable of coming to terms with what ‘normal’ is in Islam. It’s only engaged in the tired old political fight with the ‘right’, playing the tired, outdated game of ‘majority’ and ‘minority’ – without any grasp of ideas and their role. The left is not ‘unintelligent’, in its political fervor, it has become blind, often deliberately so. As such, the left has become a bigger problem for mankind than the right, or Islamic ‘extremism’ could ever be for us all.

The black or the white orertations. brown makes no differ ence for the one who is colour blind and therefore has no impact on the world events. Fact is however, that in todays world of muslims there are more collborators than were during the period of colonial Raj. Fact is also that the caste system has come to surface both in the Indo Pak subcontinent and Afria after they gained independence from the colonialists. We are dealing with facts today and no longer reading thesis nor writing dissertations.

    Tajender,
not so fast sir with secular label; we do not have a secular constitution but it is based on the values derived from the sscriptures. We have more cathedrals and churches and mosques and synagogues as well and they are all very popular among the believers.
The God of Ibrahim is very comphortable and his followers are receiving the muslim refugees from the middle east with compassion and solidarity against protests from the right.

    .
This is an important point. The left has to realize that speaking against extremism rooted in Islam is not against liberalism. All religions will lead to extremism if not reformed with time. The problem with Islam in our age is that some of its clearly outdated doctrines and texts have not been sufficiently rejected. This is a problem with both Sunni and Shia Islam, with Wahabism being the most (but not the only) virulent kind. When liberals talk about this they are not being bigoted, rather they are defending the rights of persecuted women in Islam, the rights of Yazidi sex slaves, Ahmadis in Pakistan, and the rights of gays and lesbians all over the Muslim world. If the liberals won’t attack the clearly obvious problems in the practice of Islam today effectively they are leaving the entire field open to the right wing nuts who will attack the Muslim world as a whole, the entire culture, good and bad, turning it into a gigantic clash of civilizations.

A load of crap! Islam does not permit the persecution of Women or their rights. There is no Islam in India, but millions of women persecution goes on unabated as we write, they are forcefully sterilised to control human growth, subjected to bonded slaver and brutal rape on high streets and in villages and then required to pay a fee for urinating in public toilets whereas men are immune from such limitations and restrictions. The Hindutwa leader’s publicly declared statement has failed since the chaiwala got himself involved in science that he is not able to understand.

A German’s View on Islam – worth reading because this is by far the best explanation of the Muslim terrorist situation I have ever read. His references to past history are accurate and clear. The author of this email is Dr. Emanuel Tanya, a well-known and well-respected psychiatrist–a man, whose family was German aristocracy prior t…o World War II, and owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism.
    .
‘Very few people were true Nazis,’ he said, ‘but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of our world had come.
    .
My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.’
    .
We are told again and again by ‘experts’ and ‘talking heads’ that Islam is the religion of peace and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the specter of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.
    .
The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honor-kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.
    .
The hard, quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the ‘silent majority,’ is cowed and extraneous. Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant.
    .
China’s huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.
    .
The average Japanese individual, prior to World War II, was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians, most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.
    .
And who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were ‘peace loving’?
    .
History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt. Yet for all our powers of reason, we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points: peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence. Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don’t speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.
    .
Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late.
    .
Islamic prayers have now been introduced into Toronto and other public schools in Ontario, and, yes, in Ottawa too while the Lord’s Prayer was removed (due to being so offensive?! To whom? Not to the vast majority of Canadians!).
    .
The Islamic way is only peaceful until the fanatics move in.
    .
In Australia, and indeed in many countries around the world, many of the most commonly consumed food items have the halal emblem on them. Just look at the back of some of the most popular chocolate bars, and at other food products in your local supermarket. Foods on aircraft have the halal emblem, just to appease the privileged minority who are now rapidly expanding throughout the world.
    .
In the U.K, the Muslim communities refuse to integrate and there are now dozens of ?no-go? zones within major cities across the country that the police force dare not intrude upon. Sharia law prevails there, because the Muslim community in those areas refuses to acknowledge British law.
    .

As for we who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts — the fanatics who threaten our way of life.
    .

Anyone who doubts the seriousness of this issue and just deletes/ignores this without sending it on, is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand.
    .

So, I beg you, extend yourself a bit and send this on and on and on in the hope that thousands, world-wide, read this, think about it, and send it on – before it’s too late . . ..

Rex, What you said is untrue, in India both men and women are required to pay for using public toilets. Who told you only women are required to pay, Tajender? See, Rex, what I wrote is not against Islam. Islam, like all other ideas, is a man-made way of life. Like all man-made ideas, Islam also has its good and bad sides. No other religion is as egalitarian as Islam is. No other religion places as much importance to charity as Islam does. But that does not mean Islam has no text and doctrine that needs repudiation with time. In Islam, women counts half as much as men, and most Muslims believe Sharia is “God’s Law” that should be implemented in the world. Islam has become too bookish, too literal, too ossified in time, and liberals more than anybody else need to highlight the absence of free speech and secularism, “divinely sanctioned” repression of women (polygamy, Talaq, Burqa, 4 witnesses for rape, women witnesses counting half as men), conditions of Ahmadis, Yazidi sex slaves, blasphemy killings, and the constant wave of terrorism arising from Islam. By doing so the liberals, instead of being bigoted, will defend the gay Muslims being hurled off of rooftops; the freethinkers and the secularists being put to death in Saudi Arabia, and the advocates for equality and free speech in the Muslim world who are braver and more important than their counterparts in the free world.

“Daesh”/”IS”/”ISIS”/”ISIL” is a mindset. The “Daesh mindset” is the mindset of the “Militant/Violent Mullah” who wants nothing – nothing but political power. And the mindset of “Militant Mullaism” is very much present, rather rampant in Pakistan. Hence, “Daesh” is present in Pakistan.

    Listen to the Story.

But, apparently, many men don’t mind peeing in front of the divine. You’ll see the backs of men lining roads, walls or shrubs at any time of day. There’s no shame — when a man’s gotta go, a man’s gotta go.

It’s not quite that easy for Mumbai’s five million women. More than half of women here don’t have indoor toilets. In a typical Mumbai slum, there are something like six bathrooms for 8,000 women. Sometimes those bathrooms have collapsed, have dogs or rats living in them, or simply have no water.

Sarita, who works as a cook, gets to a bathroom maybe three times a day — if she’s lucky. She wakes up at 5:30 every morning to line up to use the facilities.

“I leave home at seven and I have to wait until I get back home — sometimes it’s nine hours, sometimes 12,” she says. “My stomach hurts when I hold it, but what can I do? Men can go anywhere, but where can a woman go?”

According to government figures, Mumbai has 3,536 public restrooms that women share with men, but not a single women’s-only facility — not even in some police stations and courts. Enter the Right To Pee movement, a coalition of NGOs fighting for more — and safer — toilets for women.

Deepa Pawar, an activist from a women’s rights organization called Vacha, has collected horror stories over the past three years about how the lack of toilets hurts women in Mumbai.

Some women get bladder and urinary tract infections from holding in their urine, while others simply don’t drink water all day to avoid the bathroom. Many women are raped or assaulted each year when they leave their homes to find a toilet, and those who find toilets safely can face other risks — scorpions, rats, infections.

And there are the larger societal issues as well: “The number one reason that girls drop out of school is because there are no toilets,” Pawar points out.

“We want to be able to take care of our basic needs like men do, and not like animals,” she says. “These are basic, human rights — the right to dignity and the right to mobility.”

Pawar says the government simply lacks the will to fix the problem. “The government has manpower, resources, strategy, authority,” she says, but no accountability.

And along with apathy comes gender bias: “When we approached the authorities, they asked us, ‘Do women even go out? Where do they have to go?’” Pawar says. “There’s no sensitization that women work or go outside the home!”

There’s also one other major problem: Even if women can find a toilet that’s clean enough to use, they have to pay to use it.

Mumtaz, a woman whose slum has one facility for every 300 women, pays to use the toilet at the Sewri bus depot. “I come here twice a day,” she says, “once at about 10 or 11 to bathe, and once in the evening before I go home. Of course they make me pay.”

The rate here is two rupees, or about 3 cents, for the toilet, and 10 rupees for the bath. It’s only a few cents, but it adds up, especially if you make less than a dollar a day and are the mother of a few girls.

So why the charge? According to the manager of one facility, it’s because women waste water — unlike men, who can simply use a urinal that has no water.

Pawar tried to tell him the government has mandated that women can at least pee for free. He merely shrugged and said he has to cover his costs.

Pawar says such a basic need shouldn’t come at a cost. “Maybe they can sell monthly passes, to help with the facility upkeep, but it shouldn’t cost so much,” she says. “Think about the college student who doesn’t earn yet. She has to ask her father for money to use the toilet. Parents already reproach girls and ask, ‘How many times will you go?’”

There is some hope on the horizon. Thanks to public pressure and a change in government, India’s parliament formed subcommittee this month to look into a woman’s right to pee. In addition to cheap, clean facilities, they’re talking about getting female attendants, trash cans and running water.

I’m not holding my breath, though. Or rather, I am — at least when I see a man standing against the wall of a building with his back turned.

A mob in Pakistan’s Punjab has set on fire a factory and its owner’s house on charges of blasphemy. As usual the police instead of arresting the mobsters, has arrested the ‘blasphemy accused’.

    .

    http://www.dawn.com/news/1221273/mob-sets-jhelum-factory-ablaze-over-blasphemy-allegations
The mindset of the mob that attacked on one whistle, is the ISIS mindset. This mindset is not only already present, but is thriving in Pakistan. Whenever Daesh/ISIS or Al Qaeda choose to strike in Pakistan, or to expand their role in Pakistan, they will not be standing in queues, waiting for visa application forms. They will not be seeking anybody’s prior approval, neither the government’s nor the Army’s, for entering Pakistan. They will not even have to physically fly in from far-away lands, neither from Syria or Iraq, nor from Afghanistan. They will simply contact “two entities”, in the locality of their choice:
    .
    1. the Mullah
    2. the Madrassah
    .
The local Maulvi Sahib and the students of the local Madrassah will take care of the rest. Cooperative police officers, are of course, an additive asset, and certainly not difficult to buy. These entities, which are abundant in Pakistan, are the tentacles of ISIS.

Not all terrorists are Muslims. We also have Naxalites and some odd Hindus in India, and there are others around the world too. But unfortunately, many of our Muslim brothers and sisters and their ‘liberal’ collaborators around the world are at the forefront of openly either making excuses for, justifying, or celebrating terrorism aimed at others. These people are being mislead by hatemongers and are being blinded by the terrible notion that normal political issues and conflicts between people can be resolved by creating the terror of ordinary civilians killing ordinary civilians.

    @sta (November 22, 2015 at 4:19 pm)

The mindset of the mob that attacked on one whistle, is the ISIS mindset. This mindset is not only already present, but is thriving in Pakistan.

In spite of the efforts of Jinnah, who was named “Kafir-e-Azam” by the Ulama of Majlis-e-Ahrar (now known as Majlis Tahaffuz Khatm-e-Nubuwwat), Pakistan is heading towards being an Islamic state (IS). Had the Ulama left things to the mercy of Jinnah, this country would surely have become the Napak-istan which Hazrat Maulana Maudoodi had predicted, and rightly named. The Pak Army is struggling to counter the efforts of the Ulama, but to no avail. There are 40,000 madrassas in Pakistan as compared to one Pakistan Military Academy. Key question: is 1 greater or 40,000?

UP ke baad sab khel khatam ho jayega….BJP without Modi is worse than congress..uski kuttey se bhi zayada uuri halat hai…so far Modi had been their saviour..but he lost miserably in delhi, got trounced in Bihar and a similar fate,if not worse,is waiting for him in UP.After UP ,it will be clear, that he can defeat secular force of congress at centre but not castiest(Lallu) or regional(Nitish) forces at the locallvel….As congress has already sensed that, it will bring about a united front headed most probably by Nitish Kumar as PM-incumbent.

Kashmir interests Pakistan and muslims as part of the Ghazwa e hind for exterminating Hindus and hindu identities.
All this crying about the fate of Kashmir has only this backgound.
The ghazwa against Hindus began in 710 AD and Pakistan and BD are its islamic fruits and exterminating Hindus in those regions has already proceeded exceedingly.

If muslim Population grows then it bad for the earth, the environment and the non-muslims.

Ghazwa e hind began in 710 Ad although Hindus had never invaded or hurt the arabs.
Many Hindus were fooled by islamic Propaganda into becoming proud Killers of Hindus.
That is the real history of the islamic paradise of Pakistan. Jinnah etc. are just petty Tools and quislings in all this.

When muslims cry over their own victimhood then they conveniently Forget or hide the fascism and genocides done by muslims.
Muslim history-writing is typical fascistic history writing.

Genuine God will put an end to this arab Religion due its lies, evilness and fascism.
    That day is neigh.

In spite of the efforts of Jinnah, who was named “Kafir-e-Azam” by the Ulama of Majlis-e-Ahrar (now known as Majlis Tahaffuz Khatm-e-Nubuwwat), Pakistan is heading towards being an Islamic state (IS).

    .
Let’s put it this way : In spite of the efforts of those who named Quaid-e Azam “Kafir-e-Azam”, Pakistan did come into existence. Likewise, the course, that this country will take, will also be contrary to the one desired by those who called Quaid-e Azam “Kafir-e-Azam”.
