India’s Tyrst With Destiny: 1947-2015

1-16 PTH is grateful to Johnny Sahib for making this contribution on request. PTH does not essentially agree with everything presented in the article.

By Johnny

“Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to light and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.”

Thus spoke Jawaharlal Nehru on the eve of India’s independence from the British Colonial Rule ,at the dying minutes of 14th August,1947. The clock moved past the midnight hour of 14/15th August,1947, and a new nation was born. This nation was unique and unparalleled in the sense that it was not a representative of war, aspirations, dreams or ambitions. Rather, it was the representative of Hope of teeming millions-unfed and unclothed people, maligned and abused for centuries.

These poor and helpless people had given up their bodies and souls to the foreign lands, to the outside events on which they had no control and helplessly accepted it as their destiny.

“The appointed day has come – the day appointed by destiny – and India stands forth again, after long slumber and struggle, awake, vital, free and independent. The past clings on to us still in some measure and we have to do much before we redeem the pledges we have so often taken. Yet the turning point is past, and history begins anew for us, the history which we shall live and act and others will write about.”

The independence brought these teeming millions a ray of hope. By the time, this moment came, the people had understood their weaknesses, their mistakes and their fallacies. They had understood the superiority of the outsiders and had learnt about their own equally glorious past. Now, what was needed was the freedom of their bodies, souls and minds from all outside interference so that they could chart their own way..

And the Hope that was making the dead nation alive was the future–Hum honge kaamyaab ,though succinctly put up as history in the speech“… history begins anew for us, the history which we shall live and act and others will write about.” And ,thus the journey started.

Seventy years down the line, where do we stand? Everyone will have his own answer to this question but all answers will lead to one conclusion –the journey lies in shambles, the hope lies in tatters.

The Rail-road ahead has completely vanished and the bogeys have turned turtle. So far, it was appearing that the journey is going in the right direction, but suddenly, it appears that the train has hit a boulder fallen from a cliff-though this is not the case.

The reasons may be many but the conclusion is the same..

On closer scrutiny, it appears that not one, not two but three sets of wheels have given away leading into jamming of the wheel-set assembly. Ironically, these three sets of wheels find their mention in the very beginning of the famous speech quoted above, therefore one has to ask himself whether the journey itself was wrongly conceived. Or it is just the case of consequential failure that as you move ahead, opposite force start acting and the weakest part gives way to the opposing forces.

The first set of wheels is “WE”. Initially, it was presumed that we means the people of India-the citizens of this country-irrespective of their religion, color, caste, creed, culture or language. However, somewhere in the middle journey, the “we” started getting into “we” and “they”. We are not They and They are not We. The “They” has become an outcast in the modern India-who are not be seen, thought of or cared for..

The second set of wheels is “India”. What is India? Who is an Indian? It is an accepted fact that in the initial phase of journey, the definition of “India” or “Indian” was very vague. But as the time changed and the world changed, the term started getting a definition.

Interestingly, the definition was more on account of the outside world than the inside world. But as luck would have it, this definition also started losing its meaning and a new definition came up. Today, an Indian means the one who is proud of the country, even if the pride is  shallow and totally false.

The Indian has to blow his own trumpet day in and day out that everything born in this country has been great and greatness is the virtue of the country. Any thing foreign is of inferior variety as long has it is not helping in the attainment of this greatness—English language for example. If somebody objects to the falsehood, he is promptly branded as Un-Indian.
The last set of wheels is “History”. So far, it has been an accepted fact that the history of India is in three distinctive parts-Ancient period, Medieval period and Modern period.

The ancient period is assigned to the times immemorial to about 12th Century AD. During this period, immigrants came in wave after wave to the land, but they dissolved themselves in the native contemporary culture and society.

The “foreign” effect had been minimal. The foreign effect, whatsoever, was indigenized and merged with the mother culture. For the first time in 13th Century, a wave came but it brought its own set of customs and
traditions. This wave did not adopt the culture of this land but started spreading its own culture, which it thought was more contemporary and with-the-times and thus more beneficial to the mankind as such.

However, before this wave could make an everlasting impact on whatever indigenous, another wave came, which subdued the earlier wave. This wave was not interested in cultures and traditions, it was mainly looking for trade and profit.    Though, it made profound changes in the upper strata of the indigenous society which was destined to become the torch-bearer of the country in the future.

When the country got independence, all three sets of period were clubbed together to form the history of the land and its people. Later on, this history started acquiring a new meaning that attempts were started to delete a particular period of history from the history of this land. And also, to glorify the ancient history even by with the help of blatant lies.

Now who is right and who is wrong-nobody cannot say for sure. But one thing is sure that unless these issues are resolved, the country cannot move ahead. Worse, these issues have now taken political dimensions, so
these groups cannot be taken care of through democratic means because that would then mean the elimination of an alternative power structure.

But one thing is certain that two versions of We, India and History cannot exist side by side. Either, a consensus has to be reached between the groups once and for all or one of the group should be prepared to get eliminated totally.

Unless, of course ,a dark horse appears from the woods and takes both

Excerpts from Secret Circular No.411 issued by the RSS:
[.] Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes are to be recruited to the party so as to increase the volunteers to fight against the Ambedkarites and Mussalmans.
Hindutva should be preached with a vengeance among physicians and pharmacists so that, with their help, time expired [sic.] and spurious medicines might be distributed amongst the Scheduled Castes, Mussalmans and Scheduled Tribes. The newborn infants of Shudras, Ati-Shudras, Mussalmans, Christians and the like should be crippled by administering injections to them. To this end, there should be a show of blood-donation camps.
Encouragement and instigation should be carried on [sic.] more vigorously so that the womenfolk of Scheduled Castes, Mussalmans and Christians live by prostitution.
Plans should be made more foolproof so that the people of the Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes, Musslamans and Christians, especially the Ambedkarites, become crippled by taking in [sic.] harmful eatables.
Special attention should be given to the students of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes so as to make them read the history written according to our dictates.
During riots the women of Mussalmans and Scheduled Castes should be gang-raped. Friends and acquaintances cannot be spared. The work should proceed on the Surat model.
Publication of writings against Mussalmans, Christians, Buddhists and Ambedkarites should be accelerated. Essays and writings should be published in such a way as to prove that Ashoka was opposed to the Aryans.
All literature opposed to Hindus and Brahmins are [sic.] to be destroyed. Dalits, Mussalmans, Christians and Ambedkarites should be searched out. Care should be taken to see that this literature do [sic.] not reach public places. Hindu literature is to apply [sic.] to the Backward Classes and Ambedkarites.
The demand by the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for filling in the backlog vacancies in services shall by no means be met. Watch should be kept to see that their demands for entry and promotion in government, non-government or semi-government institutions are to be rejected and their service records are destroyed with damaging reports.
Measures should be taken to make the prejudices amongst Scheduled Castes and Backward people more deep-rooted. To this end, help must be taken from saints and ascetics.
Attacks should be started with vigour against equality, preaching communists [sic.], Ambedkarites, Islamic teachers, Christian missionaries and neighbours [?].
Assaults should be made on Ambedkar’s statues with greater efforts.
Dalit and Muslim writers are to be recruited to the party and by them essays and literature opposed to the Dalits, Ambedkarites and Mussalmans written and preached [sic.]. Attention is to be paid to see that these writings are properly edited and preached [sic.].
Those opposed to Hindutva are to be murdered through false encounters. For this work the help of the police and semi-military [sic.] forces should always be taken.”[2]
    *
In the face of this circular, no more evidence is needed to show what Hindutva actually bodes for the Dalit-Bahujans. It circular very clearly indicates that Hindutva aims essentially at preserving the oppression of the Dalit-Bahujans, in addition to the Muslims and Christians, on which the entire edifice of Brahminism stands.

What is really hard to believe is that you got admitted to a PhD program with such a dimwitted unreasoning and unreasonable propagandistic mindset.

    {{{{Bhai Jaiho has as usual stated something quite profound and he is right that these various narratives have to be reconciled if India has to move ahead.}}}

Jum paee. the main problem is that because of altogether different version of the nationhood, the two national parties dont co-operate. They put barriers in each other’s working and they will not allow other to work, a far as possible. This is applicable at Centre Level. Since this concept of nationhood does not arise in State level, there they co-operate with each other and there is no bitterness.

The time has come that the two national parties arrive at a consensus that as to what does nationhoood of India means and stands for. Otherwise, both will be eliminated by the Third horse!!!!!

“GROWING INTOLERANCE”, AND WHY CONGRESS LOVES IT
    ..
Indian National Congress, the grand old party of India, suffered its worst ever electoral defeat in May 2014. Reduced to 44 seats, it was staring at a risk of being pushed to the margins if immediate corrective steps were not taken.
    .

The reasons for its defeat were pretty obvious – corruption charges, anti-incumbency, lackadaisical leadership of Rahul Gandhi, and Modi wave.
    .

However, if you analyze them as a pragmatist, these reasons don’t warrant any “corrective” step. They are transient in nature. For example, Congress could simply shrug them off with the following responses, and the party won’t really be wrong:
    .

Corruption charges: Those are over. We’ve lost the elections. Now let’s forget about it. Indian electorate too has a short memory and they will also forget about those soon.
    .

Anti-incumbency: That’s also over. And it won’t be there in 2019. BJP will be facing it.

Rahul Gandhi: Really? If not a Gandhi, who? A Tharoor? LOL! Rahul Baba will improve. Let’s not lose hope.

Modi wave: It will subside; just a matter of time. Nothing lasts forever.

So does that mean that Congress needed to do nothing after the 2014 loss?
    ,

No! Because we are missing one thing that the party concluded as the reason for their defeat. And it was pointed out by AK Antony, who chaired a panel to analyze the reasons for the massive defeat.
    ,

In June 2014, barely three weeks after the loss, Antony had said that Congress was seen as “pro-minority” by an average Hindu, which could be one of the reasons party suffered electoral reverses. The party’s secularism was seen as “anti-Hindu” by many.
    L

What Congress was discussing immediately after its defeat (source)
The statement by Antony made news back then, and many Congress leaders were reported to have said that the party will evaluate it as a senior personal like Antony won’t speak anything without proper analysis.

Soon after that, in August there were reports that Congress had decided to go for an “image makeover”. The party decided to celebrate all religious festivals in their offices. Up to that time, the only religious festival they were celebrating was Iftaar during the Muslim holy month of Ramzan.
    .
It was clear that the statement by Antony was not one-off. The party was serious about what he had pointed out and if any corrective step was to be taken, it was on this front.
    .
In December same year, it was reported that party had decided to seek feedback from its cadre if it was perceived as “anti-Hindu”. A Times of India report claimed that ‘in around 20 meetings with Rahul Gandhi, almost every group of leaders underlined the backlash due to Congress’s pro-minority stance’.
    L
All this while, from June to December 2014, BJP kept winning assembly elections and Congress and its allies kept losing. Among the elections the party lost to BJP was in Maharashtra where the incumbent Congress-NCP government had declared reservations for Muslims. Party wondered if the “pro-minority” image hurt them again.
    .
Basically in 2014, Congress knew that it had a “pro-minority” problem and it needed to find a solution.
    .
The solution couldn’t have been stepping away from minorities. That would be suicide. In India, “minorities” form a big chunk of voters, and one can say it without a sense of irony. Not only that, the “intellectual” support system would have also deserted the Congress.
    .
So becoming a little less pro-minority was not at all the solution.
    .
In essence, the problem was – an average Hindu thinking that Congress preferred minorities, especially Muslims, at the cost of welfare of Hindus. That the party was unfairly and unreasonably obsessed with minority issues.
    .

    Keywords being “unfairly” and “unreasonably”.
    .

Bingo! That’s where the solution lied. The party didn’t need to shed its pro-minority stand, but all it needed to do was to convince the average Hindu that its obsession with minority issues was not “unfair” and “unreasonable”.
    ,

And there you know what to do – convince the average Hindu that the minorities in India were being unfairly and unreasonably targeted.
    .

So towards the end of 2014, after losing the general and four assembly elections, Congress appeared to have finally found the solution.
    ,

And coincidentally around the same time, towards end of 2014, we started hearing about gharwapsi and later about attacks on Churches in Delhi – events that suggested that the minorities in India were being unfairly and unreasonably targeted.
    ,

Remember, gharwapsi was not any new event as I had pointed out last year here and here, and even the attacks on Churches were all found to be either hyped orfabricated. But they helped create a narrative.
    ,

Every stray incident needed to be magnified, every loose comment needed to be mainstreamed, and every misrepresentation needed to be reinforced.
    .

The end message – minorities were not safe, and the majority had to do something.

Essentially, the average Hindu was sent on a guilt trip.
    .

This works almost every time and everywhere. Recently we saw how an average European, who was not too sure about taking immigrants and refugees, was convinced that every European country should take them in after the shocking picture of the dead Syrian kid sent them on a guilt trip. They, as individuals, started believing that the poor kid died as they didn’t do enough.
    .

An average Hindu had to similarly feel personally guilty for the man who was killed in Dadri.

A sense of guilt is very strong emotion and it can overpower other senses, especially the logical or rational ones.
    .

And it worked. In early 2015, BJP was decimated in Delhi. Not entirely due to narrative, but as I had pointed in my post then, the narrative did help AAP – which is basically a party that claims to be a non-corrupt Congress. If it helped AAP, it will definitely help them once people forget about their scams, Congress would have thought.
    .

So all they needed was to continue this narrative that convinces the average Hindu that minorities in India needed disproportionately high attention and care. And starting with gharwapsi around the same time last year, it has continued unabated since then – the latest avatar being “growing intolerance”.
    .

So within a span of one year, Congress has successfully inverted its weakness of being “pro-minority” into being its strength. Now the ball is in BJP’s court.
    .

Some in the party are trying to counter it with data and logic, but that will fail. As I had mentioned in this article earlier – the sense of guilt will overpower those. In fact, already it has been declared that data was not important, mahaul (mood) was important.
    .
The party or the government can’t win this war with data or logic. It doesn’t have to counter anything; it has to help the average Hindu get off that guilt trip.
    ..
The problem primarily is of perception, and it has to find a solution, just like Congress could find a solution to its problem of being perceived as “pro-minority”.
