Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s Letter To President Arif Alvi

Last few weeks, media was abuzz with reports of a reference filed against Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court by President Arif Alvi on PM Imran Khan’s advice. In an unprecedented move, Justice Qazi Faez Isa has written a letter to President Arif Alvi complaining about the media trial that he’s been subjected to In the 5-page letter, QaziFaez Isa has reminded the President, the minister of law and authorities at information ministry about the oaths of their office that bar them from revealing ‘any matter … brought under my consideration’. Qazi Faez Isa went on to respond to the charges levelled against him through media by various govt officials. He says that he was under no obligation to declare the assets owned by his wife or children, who were all adult individuals. Isa voluntarily disclosed the details about his family members.He also added that his law firm was acknowledged for paying highest amount of taxes by President of Pakistan in 2004 ‘My former partner … was bestowed the prestigious Sitara-e-Imtiaz … for being the highest individual tax payer’ He says the income tax he had paid the year before he became Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court was more than his total salary as Chief Justice of Balochistan. Justice Isa also questioned if PM Imran Khan, on whose advice the reference was submitted to the council, had also disclosed the assets of his family members. He added that the reference could be an attempt to undermine the independence of judiciary. But Justice Isa resolved that ‘I will not permit this to happen’ and will ‘preserve, protect and defend the Constitution’ .
