Obituary:Javad Nurbakhsh- A Sufi Soul
A leading Iranian Sufi, he was also a noted psychiatrist, author and medical clinic director By Leonard Lewisohn The Guardian, Wednesday 7 January 2009 The master of a branch of the Nimatullahi order of Sufism in Iran, Dr Javad Nurbakhsh not only furthered the cause of his religion, but was also one of the country’s leading psychiatrists. When the upheavals of the Iranian revolution in 1979 caused him and many others to emigrate, he continued to organise the practice of Sufism abroad till his death in Britain at the age of 81. Sufism is the mystical tradition within Islam whose followers – Sufis, or dervishes – espouse a religion of love based on poetry, music, and utilising various esoteric contemplative practices, the most important of which is a type of interior prayer … Read entire article »

it is written on the clouds
temporal credit musuf it is written on the clouds how you’d smile today dress tomorrow the heart of the mirror of Truth broken in pieces ensconced and cherished reflected collective sighs grins, groans and grunts writ on the floating ships seen in the possessed shards the conundrum – why are you angry with me one day and smile the next you say that too is decreed the fog of fall with its abrahamic colors shrouds un-heavenly judgments the smoke of saffron lets no wails through nor does the miasma of fire or the smaze of voices gods are invented through the … Read entire article »
Two poems by Rehman Baba
by Aadil Shah Abdur-Rehman (1650 – 1715 A.D) widely known as Rehman Baba was a great Pushtu Sufi poet who is regarded as the most read and quoted Pushtu poet of the larger belt of Afghanistan and the North Western Frontier Province of Pakistan. There isn’t much known about his life due to the lack of eyewitness accounts yet a few legends portray him to be a reclusive poet, singing his poems near the Bara River while strumming a Rebab. His poetry shows him to be a poet who had full command on fiqa (jurisprudence) and tasawwaf (Sufism). A powerful Sufi touch in his poetry notwithstanding, he was not inclined to a particular order of Sufism and it is more likely that Rahman Baba was an free soul, with an individualistic practice of Sufism similar to … Read entire article »
The Ultimate Union of the Heart-Mind
temporal Dil say jo baat nikalti hay, asar rakhti hay Par nahiN, taaqat e parwaaz magar rakhti hay Words that emanate from the heart carry (more) weight Without wings, they can fly (great) distances – Iqbal The large majority of those who live in the west have difficulty in understanding what it is to think with the mind of the heart. Voltaire perhaps came closest: Meditation is the dissolution of thoughts in Eternal awareness or Pure consciousness without objectification, knowing without thinking, merging finitude in infinity. … Read entire article »
