We only have one planet

By Usman Sadiq: Peace and freedom of speech are not conflicting ideals, if not interdependent values that accentuate, supplement and sometimes restrain each other. The polarized views I could see on my friends’ riling statuses were my first introduction to a viral video that had resulted in violence across parts of the Muslim world. In my view, the video was an appalling and pornographic way of expressing one’s blind hatred and anger against Islam, as opposed to any serious theological, historical or intellectual challenge to Islamic ideals. The ruckus that in turn ensued in Libya, killing 5 innocent human beings, was a deplorable way of terrorizing the world in the name of religion. It might look like the point where agreement and peace are permanently punctured to give in to violence. … Read entire article »

Using Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Other Internet Tools, Pakistani Terrorist Group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Incites Violence against Shi’ite Muslims and Engenders Antisemitism

:By Tufail Ahmad Introduction Contrary to the popular perception and notwithstanding the Pakistani government’s ban, the militant religious group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) runs a vibrant organization at the grassroots level in Pakistani towns, recruiting members, propagating its activities and holding regular organizational elections to elect its local leaders. The Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) – the military of SSP – too is active and runs a vibrant media campaign on the internet, using U.S.-based social networking sites such as Twitter, … Read entire article »

Mayagate and its aftermath

by Aysha Raja Last weekend saw the widespread condemnation and sustained social media campaign against Maya Khan culminate with the firing of the contentious host from Samaa TV. I would proudly have claimed it a blow against the increasingly oppressive bhaigarat brigade, had the word “blow” not dredged up some disturbing imagery of it’s own. Dissent, in the wake of the unfortunate episode of Subah Saverey Maya kay Sath, swamped the interwebs in all shapes and forms … Read entire article »

Aaloo-eating zionists – Pakistan’s youth reacts to daily doses of ghairat and lies

By Saadia Gardezi The latest music video to go viral in the Pakistani blogosphere, Aaloo Andey by Beyghairat Brigade, says most of what those on the centre and left are thinking. The Pakistani virtualverse has been twittering about the satire since it came out. However there has also been some verbal violence against the views expressed in the song, characteristic of the Pakistan we live in… what for one man thinks is xenophobic nationalism, for another is just … Read entire article »

Aalu Andey vs Gandey Andey: A Tale of Two Videos

Raza Habib Raja In the past few days, I have had the privilege of seeing two extraordinary videos, one of which spanned barely 3 minutes, and the other was a real brain tester, which lasted for over 30 minutes. The formats were very different, as one was a song, and the other was a television talk show. The schism and the contrast ran much much deeper than the formats, and yet in a strange paradoxical way, there were similarities and an ironical linkage between the two videos. The thing which connected the two videos was that  in the first video, in just breath-taking three minutes, three aspiring musicians gave very credible reasons for what exactly was wrong with the second video. Both the videos were linked in another way: First featured a totally raw rock and … Read entire article »

Dr. Aamir Liaquat – Raja Dahar’s Muddy Sheep

By Rameez Karamat Ali “Do not believe in that, just relax and cool… disgusting conspiracy spread by those who do not want to promote Ishq-e-Rasool (saww)” - this was the reaction of Dr. Aamir Liaquat on his Twitter account (@AamirLiaquat). Before going into details, I just want to tell you a real story. Aftab Iqbal, well known anchor acting like a satirist, once quoted in his TV show that Raja Dahar consulted his intentions with one of his senior minister regarding marrying her own sister, as a Pandit recommended. Minister suggested Raja to marry her sister immediately but Raja was confused when he thought about public reaction. But his minister asked him to bring a healthy sheep with heavy wool on it. Then he put some mud on the heavy wool of sheep and spread … Read entire article »

Taliban sympathisers and the Swat flogging video

Posted by Raza Rumi Zubair Torwali has reported from the field and debunked the perverse myths on the flogging video. This is followed by the brave and daring Samar Minallah’s account of the flogging saga and what more proof do Taliban sympathisers want. PTH is carrying these two pieces in solidarity with these two individuals who believe in a progressive and peaceful Pakistan and condemn militancy at great personal risk. Swat has witnessed many harsh and cruel days. For about two years, it presented a view of Afghanistan during the heyday of the Afghan Taliban. The man who ignited the situation against the state of Pakistan — Sufi Mohammad — was spared (seemingly by design) for about three years. The MMA was then the ruling government in the province. In 2008, … Read entire article »

The Video that shook Pakistan

Courtesy The Daily Times COMMENT: The video that shook Pakistan —Syed Mansoor Hussain By establishing a bench to look into the matter and demanding production of the victim in the court, the CJ has done the right thing. The unfortunate fact though is that it is extremely unlikely that any branch of the government of Pakistan has the ability or even desire to fulfil the orders of the honourable court … Read entire article »

True colours of so called 'Sharia' Law – a citizen speaks

True colours of so called 'Sharia' Law – a citizen speaks

Malik has sent this exclusive contribution for the Pak Tea House. There are lots of people who come forward to defend or sympathize with Taliban, and defend the SHARIAT Law agreement between Government and EXTREMIST religious fanatics. They, in favor of “peace” agreement put an argument that “Why are we killing our own Muslim brothers?” “Why we are fighting American War? “Why we are serving others’ agenda by killing our own Muslim brothers who are struggling … Read entire article »

"Musheer" Video- when music articulates politics

by Raza Rumi A group of young firebrand revolutionaries – alas what an alien word it has become these days – has created this fabulous music video. The inspiration is a poem by Habib Jalib called “Musheer” (advisor) that Jalib composed as a satire against Hafiz Jalandari during Ayub Khan’s era. As the man on the guitars, Taimur Rahman says, “It is equally valid today”.  [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPsr1RnEfWo] The vocalist is ”comrade” Shahram Azhar and Mrs Rahman is in the background. Of course the trio are activists of the Communist Mazdoor Kissan Party. Taimur Khan helped them produce it. I must say that Shahran’s voice is quite soothing. At least the Left is not dead in Pakistan – we need plural voices against neo-liberalism for an egalitarian and more just Pakistan. A detailed introduction is below: … Read entire article »

Human Rights Watch – hard work on Pakistan

This is a brilliant summary of Human Rights Watch’s reports on Pakistan during the last one year. These are diverse topics that cover the entire range of key issues concerning rights. Pak Tea House would like to acknowledge the hard work that its staff and researchers have undertaken in their tireless advocacy. Most importantly, HRW has been unique in trying to understand Pakistan and its issues from within. And not, as external, patronising monitors but as friends and those who are trying to understand without pre-conceived notions.
